Today we’d like to introduce you to Essence Boyd.
Hi Essence, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started doing lashes 5 years ago when I was in a place of trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. I was a server and bartender for most of my years and that wasn’t enough for me. One day I called a guy friend who is a barber and I asked him if he’s ever heard of lash extensions and what he thought about me investing in learning to do them. From then he introduced me to Alisha McKay of Royal Lashes.
I took her class and began my journey of becoming great at what I do. I had a few hardships along the way which causes me to lose everything but lashes were all I had and I knew I had to make it work! There was never a plan B for me so giving up was never an option! I come from a background where going to college and finding a career or working a job were my only 2 options so what I was doing was very different from everything I once knew. I had to develop the mindset of a hustler & that’s exactly what I did. Everything I sacrificed has been laid off tremendously and I am forever grateful for that.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely hard transitioning to a business owner and making my hobby a career. I ended up losing my job, and my car and I was sleeping on a friend’s floor for months when no one even knew.
I’ve always wanted to do things the right way so when I first attended Esthetics school I had to walk and ride the bus just so I could make it without any excuses! I didn’t have a lot of the same friends because they couldn’t understand what I was going through! I sat down a whole year just to build myself back up again as well as my clientele.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an esthetician but I specialize in eyelash extensions. This is a luxury service that has made an amazing impact on the beauty industry. I think what sets me apart from others is that not only is my work amazing but my personality matches that.
If you get serviced by me you will feel welcome and have a great time in a safe space. Whether you just want to go to sleep or if you have things to vent about, my girls never have to worry about being judged or their business getting out. I treat my clients as though they are the mini family that I created.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I’m a true country girl at heart. I love cooking and singing. Which hardly anyone knows that I can do! I’m a family-oriented person, I love my family!
