Today we’d like to introduce you to Chisa Pennix-Brown, MBA.
Hi Chisa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I started my business as soon as I graduated from Elon University. It has transitioned over the years, but we always kept the mission to Enlighten, Enhance, Empower, and Enrich the community in which I serve. That company was Lady Bizness and we focused on marketing, branding, and helping people show up and show out online. Now, my husband, Montro Brown, and I have created a company that aligns with who we are as a couple and as business owners.
Our new company, Give it to the People, is a Mental Wealth company, focused on getting your mind right and your money right through content creation and Curated Conferences. We own an intimate Content Curation Studio, based in Downtown, Greensboro, NC, but we travel all over and help companies and individuals curate their conferences. Our signature event is the BLK BIZ SUMMIT.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has been curved, to say the least. I think that in business you must understand that there will be some roadblocks, but in my experience, it’s usually you that is stopping your success. Once you figure out the formula and truly see your worth there will be nothing to stop you from going full steam ahead.
I would say the biggest struggles came when deciding to change direction. At one point I put all of my energy into one client and that did not end well. When you leave yourself in a position that relies on one stream of income and that stops it can be difficult. That actually led me to be depressed for a couple of months, but it turned into a blessing in disguise. The inspiration I found from that experience helped me to write my book, “The 90-Day Focus: Your Action Plan for Success”. Ever since that revelation I started operating everything in 90-day increments which led us to be more prepared and confident in gaining the right clientele for our business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One thing I love to do is be me. During Covid, I created a podcast called, Real Ass Affirmations. Since its inception, we have reached over 250,000 downloads and counting. The podcast is a mental health creative outlet that allows me to cuss and give confidence simultaneously. I love to give lessons and use real-life experiences to help others that are just living their lives trying to be a better version of themselves.
I am most proud of the opportunity to continually speak in front of audiences that want to learn how to be better. I feel that the experience of being a native New Yorker, who lives in the South, and who happens to be a dope black woman business owner that embraces her creativity and is unapologetic about who I am is freeing. My brand is built on color, confidence, and quality and I don’t sacrifice either for anyone.
Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am a risk-taker who believes in my own power to make things come to fruition. I am also a person of faith and I believe in being abundant in mindset as well as professionally. My biggest risk was opening this studio after Covid. We did the research and looked at what business owners really need. After all these years I can say confidently that the answer is how to accomplish what they want with accountability and consistency.
My husband, on the other hand, is risk-averse. He wants to know why and how much and what you are going to do to get back the money that was spent. This dynamic keeps me grounded and allows me to be a better communicator. It keeps us from wasting money and allows us to understand how each decision is going to help us grow. I used to be very free with doing things because I “want to”. Now, I am more cautious in my approach and I appreciate his guidance.
