Today we’d like to introduce you to Elliott Smith.
Hi Elliott, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
As a child, I was always creative in drawing buildings, breaking computers, fixing them, and learning and understanding technology. As I went through my high school years, I was a part of several art and graphic(s) contest. I actually knew that I wanted to have a career as a Graphic Designer by the time I graduated high school. From there I attended Memphis College of Art, where I was able to really hone my skills. Also studying abroad in Spain really opened my eyes to graphic design, the unlimited scope of creativity, and also gaining insight on technology and the endless possibilities behind this new upcoming tech field. I graduated from Memphis College of Art, and I grew into a very strong graphic designer.
From there I started doing photography, videography, and also developing websites. As the years progressed, I started my own company eGrafixs in 2002, and from there I was able to do freelance design, creating Marketing & Branding for small and large corporations for several years, and I have continued to grow my business and advertise outside of the city of Memphis, I have been fortunate to be able to travel to California, Illinois, Texas, and Florida to name a few places where I was one of the intricate parts in developing small businesses, and also taking on large corporation contracts throughout my twenty-plus years.
Now I have a multimedia company that strives for excellence and makes our clients look and feel good about their company or brand. It’s hard work to establish yourself, but it is worth it when people acknowledge your company for the hard work that you do.
I continue to strive and mentor kids. I also have set up a foundation that we are going to be starting in the coming years. We will be giving back to the community of Memphis by adding those technical skills, those artistry skills and also knowledge of technology, in general, to expand the education to each child in the community.
After more than two decades I have the understanding, gratitude, wisdom, and knowledge to continue to grow!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and, if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a fairly smooth ride throughout these years, but it was rough towards the beginning when I had to hone in on acquiring contracts, to set up my hourly rates, and to put together a presentation to bring awareness to my business.
All these things I didn’t take into consideration until I really saw the dynamic of other illustrators and other designers of the corporations in marketing brands. I knew I had to step up my game, so I got my contracts in order to change my hourly rates, and considered all that I had was valuable for each project.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I do a variety of things in the design and media space. I am a multimedia designer, in which I specialize in all areas now from app and web development, commercials, billboard advertisements, radio advertisements, websites, and a gamut of things within the digital world.
Currently, I’m working on VR (virtual reality) technology in AI (artificial intelligence) technology which is very prominent in a field that is up-and-coming. I have been studying those industries for the last few years, and I think I’m going to take on the new task of creating something for the virtual space.
That is what has always set me apart – thinking outside of the box and making my own box that I can stand on and be proud of concerning any service I provide.
