Meet Alison G. Thompson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison G. Thompson.

Hi Alison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I am an Oxford, MS native and a graduate of the University of Mississippi and the University of Memphis, respectively. I developed my love for reading from my mother at a young age.

There was always an Eric Jerome Dickey or a Terry McMillan book on my mother’s nightstand or workbag. As I evolved, not only did I discover my passion for reading, but my teachers, Mrs. Miller and Dr. Lowe assisted me in finding my voice through writing and speaking.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I think I share the sentiments of the late, great Langston Hughes, “Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.” I have definitely had “splinters and boards torn up.” I changed my major several times in undergrad and still did not know what I wanted to do when I graduated. I completed a master’s degree while being married and supporting my husband as we faced grief, working full-time, mothering an extraordinary toddler, and birthing  and breastfeeding a new baby, all during the pandemic.

I sat with that. I sat with the tumultuous time that my family and I had faced, but I heard God say, “This is not to paralyze you, but it is to propel you into something greater!” With all of the hurdles I jumped, ain’t no stopping me. I can literally do anything!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am the owner and head creator of Greenline Creative, LLC. Our mission is to amplify the Black voice and to hold space for Black protagonists. In 2021, my son Lucas and I published our first book entitled, Super Lucas. Our mission is to encourage everyone to use their superpowers to make the world a better place. A year later, my daughter Aria and I published, Twos with Tootie. It is a celebration of all things two for terrific two-year-olds!

Knowing the alarming literacy rates of Black children, I am an advocate for Black literacy. I am also committed to “Leaving a Legacy in a Book” as a deposit for future generations to keep dreaming and keep creating.

We are hoping to partner with more schools, libraries, and organizations to find ways to make books with Black, main characters readily available. Especially in communities where Black children live.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t second guess yourself. God has already equipped you. There are people who need your gift!
