Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiena Gwin.
Hi Tiena, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a fashion designer that always sketched clothes as a child into adulthood but didn’t believe that it was possible.
Fast forward to 2010, I was laid off from my job. I decided to pursue design school after finding out about a fashion school in Little Rock, Ark. I went there for 2 years driving to Little Rock from Memphis and learning patterning and garment construction. I ended up getting another job and working there for a few years and after getting accepted to show in Memphis Fashion Week, I decided to launch my brand in 2016.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road at all.
Creating apparel from design ideas to finished products is a very costly and demanding process. And it isn’t often appreciated in this climate of fast fashion unless you are a large brand name. I have had to start, stop, pull back, restart, and stop again, get a job to try to figure this out to create a platform for “my” art.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a fashion designer that specializes in women’s apparel. I design, pattern, and sew the looks and create prints for the fabrics that I use. I am known for my ultra-feminine looks, clean lines, and high-fashion delivery.
I am most proud when I am able to create looks the exact way that they show up in my mind. What sets me apart is I always stay true to the vision of the design. I do not deviate from the vision which comes across in the finished product.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
The design makes me happy. It makes me happy because it chose me and I know it is of the Divine.
