Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamesha Henderson.
Jamesha, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was born and raised in Binghampton. Oldest of three children. I always had a pretty big imagination. I always did the best I could with the resources and opportunities I had in front of me. I graduated from East High School in 1998 and became a Sailor in the United States Navy in the fall. I served almost 21 years on Active Duty, retiring as a Chief Information Systems Technician. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Cybersecurity from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and a host of industry certifications while on active duty.
I started Mod Chaos in July 2017. What does Mod Chaos mean? Mod or modish, meaning stylish; and Chaos because I was a part of so many different things and my life was moving so fast it was chaotic. I was actually a bit nervous about retiring, and being with being creative always being an outlet–I started customizing shoes by using rhinestones, or bling work as an outlet. It was and still is my safe space.
I can go to my office, which I call “da lab”, and work for hours. I wore my first pair of shoes to a party. A few people told me that they loved them and that I should start a business selling them. Fast forward to today… Mod Chaos is evolving into a luxury customs brand and business where I take a portion of the profit to help organizations in need.
Some of the organizations Mod Chaos has made contributions to are the Ora Lee Smith Foundation for Cancer Research, Flint Water Crisis, Jackson, MS water crisis, feeding the Need during Thanksgiving (MODSgiving), coats for Kids, battered women shelters, and a host of other initiatives. Mod Chaos is a brand where you can look good and make a difference at the same time.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been challenging. It is still a challenge–especially in today’s economy. I am currently at a crossroads where I want to scale, but I know I can’t do it without a team. Building something consistent I know people want is a challenge as well.
Many times with customs businesses–because there are so many, I feel people don’t take this type of business seriously. Also, getting out of my own head. Many times, the resources can be right in front of us and we still look in the other direction.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Mod Chaos is a luxury customs business and brand where I take a portion of my profit to help organizations in need. Mod Chaos consists of;
1. Mod Chaos Luxury Travel which was recently released. The Luxe backpack is available for pre-order now. The duffle bag is being released soon. My travel accessories are the perfect blend of luxury, functionality, and style.
2. Mod Chaos the Brand — brand apparel and accessories.
3. Customs – Custom apparel and accessories.
4. I am also an authorized vendor with Wedding Wire and The Knot so I work with a lot of brides-to-be and bridal parties.
I am most known for my customized footwear. It started with the infamous Chuck Taylor, but if the surface is good on any footwear, I can customize them. Boots, heels, sneakers, slides. What am I most proud of? The fact that Mod Chaos is growing and still here. I have watched many businesses like mine come and go. I have been able to push through any challenge put in front of me and see my baby pretty much grow before my eyes. I am just looking forward to what is next.
What sets me apart from others? ME. I have been a five-star business since the start of my business. With me having an Information Technology and leadership background–I am great at the customer service aspect of my business, and of course, my products (based on customer reviews) speak for themselves. I stick to my standard, and customers respect the standard. Everyone is a VIP at Mod Chaos–and they are treated as such–and we have fun during the process! That is the best part.
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m pretty silly. I like to joke around. I think laughing keeps me young. I show a bit of it on my business social media platforms, but not much (haha).
