The genesis of Kalaya’s Jewels To Healing, LLC was a result of a life-changing event that left me broken and shattered, both physically and mentally. The pain and trauma that followed the horrific car accident left an indelible mark on my being, and I knew that I had to do something to heal and recover.
As I embarked on my journey toward holistic health and wellness, I discovered a love that was all-encompassing and life-changing. It was a love that not only transformed my body but also my mind and spirit. The power of plant-based living and herbal remedies had a profound impact on me, and I knew that I had to share my experience with others. It was not just about the physical changes but also about the cognitive and emotional well-being that came with it.
And as I delved deeper into this world of healing, I realized that evidence-based research supports the notion that a plant-based lifestyle leads to longevity and vitality. But that was not enough. I was filled with a passion and purpose that went beyond just healing myself. I could not sit idly by while black women continued to die during and after childbirth. The pain of seeing a black man filled with joy and anticipation, only to be shattered by the news of his partner’s death, was too much to bear. It ignited a fire within me that could not be extinguished.
And so, I launched C.H.O.S.E.N Doula Services™, LLC, to educate, advocate, and support black and brown mothers and their families. It was a calling that I could not ignore, and it has had a tremendous impact on countless individuals. My commitment to maternal health and wellness and self-care is unwavering, and I will continue to fight for the lives of black women until this crisis is addressed.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
This journey has been far from easy. It has been a tumultuous and difficult road filled with heartache and pain. One of the most challenging moments that I have ever faced was the loss of my aunt to breast cancer. It was a moment that almost caused me to give up on my passion and calling, and it still resonates with me to this day.
Another struggle that I encounter on a daily basis is watching my nation of people succumb to the curse of Deuteronomy 28. It breaks my heart to see how sickness and disease ravage the black community. As someone who deeply loves my people, this is what I would refer to as spiritual pain.
And then there’s the pain of seeing black women lose their lives while giving birth. As a mother of three beautiful children, I cannot even begin to fathom the thought of leaving them behind. It hurts to know that black mothers and families are often neglected and lack access to proper medical care and resources. We deserve so much better.
To make matters worse, medical racism is on the rise, and it’s affecting black mothers at an alarming rate. It’s hard to watch as our community struggles with a lack of education when it comes to health and wellness. But despite all of these struggles, I am determined to continue my ministry work. I know that I am making a difference in the lives of those around me, one day at a time. And that, my friends, is what keeps me going.
