Today we’d like to introduce you to Kourtney Coleman.
Hi Kourtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
On the brink of the pandemic, my uncle needed some flyers for his travel agency deals. Knowing I had just had a baby and needed some extra funds, he paid me to create them. I posted the flyers on social media, and a couple of days later an old college teammate contacted me about making a logo and price list for a new business venture she was starting.
I had never made a logo but was willing to take a shot at it. She loved it and I loved the feeling I got creating it and seeing her reaction to it. From there the rest is history. I spent most of the months we were on lockdown practicing creating flyers, logos, digital business cards, and more and eventually it turned into a full fledge craft business that allows me to express my creativity.
Now fast forward three years later I still do all of the same digital marketing work but I also sell signature tee shirts, custom tees, customized baby bundles, acrylic signs, small prints like logo labels and simple business cards, door hangers, and other custom crafts. A pandemic hobby turned into a true passion.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Deciding to actually turn Kreations By Ko into a business has definitely not been easy but it has been satisfying and worth it. As a mother of a three-year-old, teacher, and a basketball coach my hands are full so managing my business on top of all of that can be very demanding but looking at a finished product. or reading my customers’ reviews and reactions to their orders makes me so happy.
Of course, with any business, there are highs and lows. Sometimes business is great and at other times it’s very slow. My biggest challenge though I would have to say is not giving myself enough credit. I am self-taught with all of my crafts and have grown tremendously in the last three years, but sometimes I lose sight of that because I am so focused on where I want to be not realizing how far I have come!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My business is Kreations By Ko. I am a self-taught graphic designer and crafter. and it is one of the things I am most proud of. All of what I do is largely based on natural God-given talent and trial and error. I create logos, flyers, digital marketing items, small prints, vinyl t-shirts, popular tennis skirt sets, acrylic signs, custom baby bundles, and other customized gifts.
I think the thing that sets me apart from other businesses is my passion for what I do and treating my customers like people and not just another order. For example, I could do 10 baby bundles in a month and I make it my mission to make sure even if the customers order something very similar, that no two orders are the exact same. I just believe in doing my best work or not doing the work at all.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Be patient with yourself. A lot of times we start out with this idea in mind of how running a business will go and most times, it does not go that way at all. Take baby steps and let God show you the plan he has for you rather than trying to tell Him how you want it to go. Most importantly focus on you. You are in the space that you are in for a reason. Don’t compare yourself to others around you. Simply trust the process and search for the reason for each season,
