Meet Kayla Shaw

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla Shaw.

Hi Kayla, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Very humble beginnings! Throughout life, I’ve faced many hardships in simply finding my way and learning how to set the tone. My motivation has always come from my mother as a child she was my biggest inspiration. I’m the oldest of two and the only girl. By the time I was in grade school, I enjoyed the finer things in life but I didn’t want to remain comfortable and stagnant. All my peers manifested that they have seen me being something big but honestly, I never knew my calling outside of the medical field. Throughout my years of high school and college, I did hair to make a living but never grew a passion for it.

After losing faith and transferring from Austin Peay State University I earned a bachelor’s degree from the notable University of Memphis in Health Studies and Healthcare Leadership in 2020. After taking a year off to travel and gain more income I started an online boutique called “Conceited Boutique”. However, I still didn’t seem to have a passion for what I was doing. Months later I was exposed to a new city and finally managed to take modeling seriously. I’ve always had a love for modeling when participating in local fashion show events but never took it as seriously. Modeling has allowed me to be confident while still embracing my characteristic of being shy. Currently, as a nursing student at the prestigious Baptist Health Science University, I’ve managed to still pursue a modeling career in Los Angeles and New York fashion week.

I now work with dope designers to ensure that I bring their vision to light, provide future entrepreneurs with vendor list guides to become their boss, create custom wig units to enhance women’s natural beauty, and has also been able to create a nonprofit organization that gives back to my community by hosting donation events to give back to the less fortunate. Because life doesn’t have a handbook, I strive to be better than the person I was yesterday and inspire young women to know that despite their background and setbacks you can always find your way in life.

As for my future, I plan to progress as a travel nurse, open a model agency for becoming models and work with outreach programs to improve living conditions in Memphis.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all I’d be lying if I said so! The struggles that I encountered along the way were simply finding my way. Self-doubt played a tremendous part in my struggles along with breaking generational curses.

I didn’t always know what I wanted to do in life I was lost on how to execute the plan. These struggles helped me build character. My passion and desires wouldn’t allow me to settle for the life that was presented to me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As I thrive on my career journey, I’ve been able to partner with global designers to bring their vision to life in significant runway shows to empower others with unique, creative, fashion styles. Outside of modeling, I have continued my studies in the medical field specializing in nursing. I’m currently known for my brand “K’ Couture Co” which is known for creating ideal wigs for clients and helping future entrepreneurs start their very own businesses with boss vendor list guides.

Despite all of my failures, I’m most proud of my success of having multiple strands of income and enjoying what I do so I don’t consider it as work. Honestly, what sets me apart from others is I don’t confirm, I always remain true to myself and do what works best for me and me only.

I’m not afraid of hard work and making sacrifices. I’m passionate about my dreams and aspirations but I know more work is required of me to achieve this. I think sometimes we get caught up in social media and began to make comparisons on where we “think” we should be in life without being thankful for where we are today.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory I remember very fondly was waking up early on a beautiful Saturday morning, listening to old-school r&b while cleaning the house top to bottom and smelling the lovely smell of breakfast cooking.

Only to find myself negotiating with my mom to go find a fashionable outfit at the mall to attend the local skate rink party with my best friends. I miss those days.
