Life & Work with Amber Allen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Allen.

Amber Allen

Amber, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started Skinvestment Body Company out of a deep personal need and a desire to help others facing similar challenges. It all began when my now Chief Marketing Officer was struggling with a recurring problem that had a significant impact on his life – eczema. Despite trying numerous products and treatments, nothing seemed to work effectively. This was a time of frustration and helplessness, not just for him but for our entire team, who witnessed his struggle.

As we watched him go through this relentless cycle of eczema flare-ups, it became apparent that there was a gap in the market. The existing skincare products just weren’t cutting it, and the ones that held promise often contained ingredients that raised concerns. Seeing someone I cared about so deeply dealing with this skin condition sparked an idea that eventually evolved into Skinvestment Body Company. I decided to take matters into my own hands and started researching and formulating solutions.

The journey towards creating our signature body butter products began with extensive research on natural and safe ingredients. I was determined to develop a product that would provide genuine relief and promote healthier, happier skin. It was a labor of love, experimenting with various formulations and seeking expert advice to ensure the highest quality. Our priority was creating something effective, yet gentle, and suitable for sensitive skin like my CMO’s.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Entrepreneurship is a thrilling journey, full of ups and downs. It’s a path where excitement and challenges often go hand in hand.

Yes and no, is the answer to whether I find entrepreneurship exciting because it’s a complex mix of emotions. There are times when it feels like an adventure, a chance to build something meaningful. Yet, there are moments when it gets weird, tough, and even disheartening. The key, I’ve found, is staying grounded and connected to my mission and vision.

For me, staying inspired and motivated is crucial. It’s not always easy to show up for yourself every single day, especially when faced with the myriad of tasks and challenges that come with entrepreneurship. To keep myself on track, I have a few practices that help me maintain focus and determination. First and foremost, I turn to prayer. It’s a personal and introspective practice that grounds me and reminds me of the bigger purpose behind what I do.

Journaling is another powerful tool. It allows me to organize my thoughts, reflect on my progress, and chart a path forward. It’s a practice that provides clarity and a sense of accomplishment, which is vital during those tough days.

Moreover, I make a conscious effort to stay connected to people who inspire me to show up and give my best. Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of individuals who believe in your mission can be a game-changer. They offer encouragement, fresh perspectives, and sometimes even solutions to challenges I might be facing.

One of the most significant hurdles I’ve encountered in my entrepreneurial journey has been the scarcity of resources. It’s vital not to put all your eggs in one basket and not to rely on a single source of support. This is a valuable lesson I’ve learned along the way. Instead, I’ve focused on diversifying my resources and ensuring that the fate of my business isn’t solely dependent on one person or one source.

Continuous learning has been my strategy to navigate the challenges arising from limited resources. By investing time in acquiring new skills and knowledge, I can make the most of my in-house resources and team. It’s a way to become more self-sufficient and less reliant on external factors.

Scaling a business requires a well-structured team. As you grow, it’s essential to develop a team that can help you attain your goals efficiently. This is especially important to prevent struggling with meeting shipping windows and processing times. A well-coordinated team ensures that your business operations run smoothly and that you can continue to deliver quality products and services to your customers.

In summary, entrepreneurship is a rollercoaster of experiences. It’s exciting, challenging, and sometimes downright weird, but staying motivated and focused on your mission is key. Remembering to diversify resources, invest in self-improvement, and build a capable team will help you overcome obstacles and continue on your entrepreneurial journey with determination and resilience.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
For new entrepreneurs, my advice is threefold: First, research your industry extensively to understand its nuances.

Second, create a strong support network of resources, whether they’re family, friends, or mentors. Lastly, treat your business like a corporation right from the start with written agreements for all your dealings. Looking back, I wish I had known the significance of written agreements early on.

They are a must for professionalism and risk management. Clear communication and safeguarding your interests should be your priorities in partnerships, regardless of your business’s size.
