Rising Stars: Meet Roosevelt Curry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roosevelt Curry.

Roosevelt Curry

Hi Roosevelt, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Born and raised in Memphis, TN straight from the BHZ (Whitehaven) area, I was a humble and straightforward child growing up. Lived with both parents and also my brother and sister, I was raised in a good stable home. Basketball was always my first love and helped me stay out of a lot of trouble growing up. I played almost every day in the neighborhood with my friends, it was almost like something that had to happen at some point in the day.

I’ve always liked music, but where I ended up falling in love with it is all due to my older brother. He put me on ALL the early 90s and 2000s hip-hop scene. From 3 6 Mafia, Playa Fly, Yo Gotti, 8 Ball & MJG, Hot Boyz, Jay-Z, Pastor Troy, and so much more. I remember vividly, that he had like a FAT booklet of CDs in his car and we rotated cd after cd anytime we were in the car just riding or headed somewhere. My brother most definitely had a HUGE impact on my love for music and listening to all the artists listed above intrigued my first interest to start rapping.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started rapping, it was all just a hobby and for fun. Me and my cousins would record on a laptop in the closet at their house. Writing lyrics was almost natural to me because I was already a good writer, and writing about things in my life and what I liked made it that much easier. Now far as rapping, it was actually kind of hard for me to find my flow. I struggled with this even as a hobby but I knew it was a process. Some of my friends in high school to college were rapping seriously and I just sat in the background picking up things from them and they had no idea I was rapping on my own.

In my first year of college in 2011, I was starting to improve my wordplay and flow in writing and recording. Then in that same year, my first semester in college, my mom passed away and it crushed my whole world. Everything came to a halt! School, music, and basketball became the least of my concerns when I hit a major depression phase. It took a lot for me to come back, but this is what led me to eventually take music seriously because my mom always wanted me to pursue the things I loved.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a musical artist. A rapper. I like to tell stories through my songs. I also like to try different music styles. I’m mostly known for my undeniable work ethic, I’ve been doing music professionally and consistently for 5 years now. I’m mostly proud of my dedication and unwillingness to give up on myself.

I have a total of 3 albums and several EP’s out on all platforms thus far and so much more to come. What I believe sets me apart is that I want to genuinely see EVERYONE win! Not just musically, but even you all interviewing me now…. I wish y’all nothing but Success and that goes from everything I’m involved in or if I’m just rooting you on.

So maybe we end by discussing what matters most to you and why.
What matters most to me is imprint. Let me explain. I feel like whatever imprint you leave on someone or anything in life goes a long way. Almost like leaving a legacy.

I love genuinely making people happy uplifting them or helping any way I can. I feel like EVERYONE wants to be respected and treated right, so why not be that shining light and brighten everyone you come in contact with?
