Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Walker.
Hi Jasmine, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My interest in beauty started at a very young age. I would get up in the middle of the night and fix my hair the way I wanted it because I never liked the way my mom styled my hair. In the morning, I made sure I had my lipgloss on and my clip-on earrings in my pocket before I headed out of the door. I had so much confidence at the age of 6.
In my sophomore year in high school, I went to a girl in Union City to get a sew-in done. I disliked my hair so much that I decided from then on I wouldn’t let anyone else touch my hair. I got on YouTube and taught myself how to do my sew-in. Once I finished my hair and saw how easy it was to do a sew-in, I fell in love with it. That experience alone grew my interest in styling hair. My cousins saw my potential and became my muse. They have supported me since day one and I am so grateful to have them in my corner.
2016 was the year that I started to take clients outside of my family. Most of my clientele came from my cousins and co-workers. Everyone would ask them who did their hair and they would send them directly to me. In 2020, I enrolled in the cosmetology program at Empire Beauty School. I knew then that’s what I truly wanted to do in life. It was rough trying to stay focused on school and being a mother at the time but I persevered.
I went to school, worked a full-time job, and took clients from time to time all while taking care of a toddler. Hard work, faith, dedication, discipline, and God is what got me through my two years at Empire. I graduated in February of 2022 and became licensed in August of 2022. I have accomplished many goals since then and I am excited to see what 2024 will bring to my career as a licensed cosmetologist.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Gaining clientele and putting myself out there while I was in school was a struggle. I had a full-time job that took so much of my time away from doing hair. I felt like it was holding me back from taking clients because I didn’t have the availability. I also felt like I was being overlooked because I was new in the game and I didn’t have many styles to post.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am known for my sleek ponytails and neat styles.
Although I am sufficient in other styles, people tend to put me in that bubble as a sleek ponytail stylist. I take pride in my work, I have to make sure that every little detail of the hairstyle is neat and well put together.
What does success mean to you?
Everyone’s definition of success is different but I define success as being able to wake up every day and do what you love while getting paid for it.
