Today we’d like to introduce you to Patrick Ellis.
Hi Patrick, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story? How did you get to where you are today?
After spending 25 years in retail management, I began my search for a new career as the pandemic was changing the country’s outlook and working landscape. From the outset, I was interested in joining the agricultural community. I have family roots in the industry, and a personal reentry has been a desire for a while. The opportunity to interview for my current position was exciting. I approached this employment opportunity with a lot of optimism. When I was selected for the position, I hit the ground running; it’s been a joyful challenge to realign my professional aptitude in a job that’s entirely different yet very much identical at the same time. I still work to serve people; the difference is that I focus on managing a process more than managing people. The goals are the same: to provide a service to the public at a high level. However, I feel more connected because I approach things from a closer level; I have the direct ability to bring change and help others. I enjoyed the journey and continue to enjoy the results of my new career as the farmers market manager at the Agricenter.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Of course, there have been challenges; it’s the nature of surviving. My professional challenges have primarily been centered around acclimation to a new environment. Managing a 6-day weekly farmers market with fifty-plus unique vendors alone required new skills. Luckily, I’ve had mentorship from the former market manager, and I partnered with the stakeholders for input and guidance. The following challenges are to foster growth and operational improvements. Promoting change in any organization can be daunting, but it’s worth the risk and effort when positive results are achieved.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am most proud of my ability to provide local farmers and artisans with business opportunities. The farmers’ market is unique in its ability to give budding entrepreneurs access to the public with only their products, a table, and a good attitude. Anyone with a product that the public wants can start and grow a business for a nominal fee. Now, we only serve those who farm raise, hand make, or home grow what they sell, but the chance for success remains the same. I specialize in helping people achieve their goals. I aim to set myself apart by consistently fostering opportunities for individuals to grow together to improve the community.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success is the opportunity to deliver good things as often as possible. I measure my success by how I can achieve my goals and help others achieve their own simultaneously.
