Rising Stars: Meet Shayna Hurston of The Bronx

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Hurston.

Shayna Hurston

Hi Shayna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story started when my uncle watched wrestling; I was drawn to it as a kid. As I grew up, my love for wrestling stayed. I didn’t have the funds to go to school for broadcast or anything like that, but one day, I just picked up a phone and said who cares if I don’t have a degree in whatever I want to talk about wrestling with like-minded people? This then set off my journey into the wrestling media world with podcasting.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It’s been the smoothest, but it’s the path I had to make work for my circumstances. As a woman, you generally face much pushback from male wrestling fans discrediting your knowledge of wrestling and any sport. You have times when you trust people in that circle, and sometimes it doesn’t always end in your favor, but it’s all a learning lesson.

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
So, I am a podcaster for wrestling, and my podcast is called The Big Pop Theory Podcast and is on multiple platforms for listening. I do review shows for Unpopular Review and Bodyslam.net. I have also collaborated with a plethora of other podcasts. On my podcast, shared with co-host Ronald Philip Jackson, we speak about the wrestling shows that went on throughout the week every week. The thing about our podcast is we like to keep it about the wrestling. We don’t always cover real-life events, as my love for wrestling has always come from what’s going on in the ring and the stories we get with it. When people think of The Big Pop Theory, they think of laughter and two people with a genuine love for wrestling. I never want people to think of my podcast and say what they will be negative or complain about this week. I always wanted it to be a safe space for people who love wrestling to talk, connect, and share what they love about it.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson I have learned is not letting the opinions of others dictate my thoughts and views on wrestling/podcasting.
