Life & Work with Quavon Hollis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Quavon Hollis.

Quavon Hollis

Hi Quavon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Brace yourself for New York’s most underrated lyricist, content creator, and streamer you will ever see! My name is Quavon Hollis, but my stage name is Clutch Boywonder. I was born in Harlem, NY, but raised in the Bronx, NY, representing both boroughs proudly! I am considered to be one of the most versatile artists in the underground scene of Hip-Hop. My flow is often described as passionate, unique, & sometimes emotional. My content is often described as funny, entertaining, & artistic. I guess you can say my crowd, niche, or audience is considered to be people who are into comics, anime, video games & other “pop culture” related things.

I started writing poetry when I was around 12 years old, talking about the hardships of growing up as a kid and seeing your mother “run the streets,” having no father, being taken care of a single mother with kids of her own, growing up to household unspoken trauma and just so much more, I guess I wrote profound poetry because I had no one to talk to about how I felt or could at the very least relate. At least I had my aunt’s kids feel like my siblings since I was technically the only child. Poetry became music after being influenced by my cousin, who was my older brother. He was a talented, all-around artist, illustrator, popular, athletic, creative, & charming. I wanted to be just like him. He recorded my first couple of songs when I was a freshman in college. He eventually slowed down due to the street life, having a child, and just dealing with his demons. As I bounced around from different living situations throughout my college years, I started to invest in myself using financial aid to buy music equipment, clothing equipment, cameras, and green screens. I began by making music on YouTube and reaction videos to DC comics TV shows such as Arrow, Flash, and Gotham. As I was diving deeper into comic books, anime, and animation, I went to New York Comic for the first time, eventually meeting more people to whom I could relate. For better or worse, I got to work with so many different people and started to make a name in this black nerd culture space. I decided to take this more seriously when I graduated and got my place. When I became consistent with this content, I discovered my older brother got locked up for something stupid I don’t want to discuss here. But just now, something in me snapped, and I created the most excellent song I ever made; my single “First Day Back” was ironically a song dedicated to him, which got a lot of buzz. I am not saying I am the most famous, but a good amount of people know my name or at least have seen my face somewhere; I make sure of it because that’s just what my energy does. As time passed, I started to brand myself more, worked on my crafts more, and created a goal: to tell my story through animation and music while becoming the most significant content creator who came out of New York City and took my family out of the hood.

It wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some struggles I had to go through were not only the family trauma but also the learning process as a creator. Meaning not only becoming extremely talented and working hard but also learning the business and marketing side of being a creator.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a content creator, musician, and part-time streamer. I specialize in pop culture content and am known for making dope music. I am proud of my single “1st Day Back,” which is dedicated to my brother. I wrote, rapped, mixed, and mastered myself. My charisma and energy distinguish me from others; it’s often described as having a “magnetic personality.”

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Harlem, but I wouldn’t say I like the Bronx.
