Check Out Kendall Spencer’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Spencer.

Kendall Spencer

Hi Kendall, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story? How did you get to where you are today?
I started on this journey back in high school around 1997-1998. I used to make tapes free, styling over my favorite rapper’s instrumentals. Artists like Outkast and Goodie Mob inspired me. Over the years, I’ve experienced a lot of ups and downs pursuing a career in hip-hop. I’ve been chasing this dream for almost 30 years, and many people ask me why I still pursue it. It’s because of the love for the art and the passion.

Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
On July 30, 2022, I was involved in a near-fatal work accident. Working as a Journeyman Lineman, I came in contact with high-voltage power lines. When my crew members finally got me to the ground, they had to administer CPR and use an AED to bring me back to life. I suffered from 3rd-degree electrical burns and significant damage to my left arm. Which eventually had to be amputated. I spent a total of 89 days in the trauma center fighting for my life. I left the hospital lost, confused, and angry. What am I supposed to do now? Where do I go from here? I had a family to provide for with no clue how I would be able to. Over the next 17 months, I dealt with depression, suicidal thoughts, and self-hating, battled an opioid addiction, and had a total of 20 surgeries. I felt utterly broken. I’ve been an independent hip-hop artist and label owner for over 20 years. I figured I’d never do music again. Through the madness, I found hope. With God’s help, strength, resilience, and newfound perspectives, I discovered the path to overcoming challenges and embracing a transformed life.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an artist of the people. My art is about the harsh realities of life. I discuss the highs and lows. I’m the only artist confident in discussing their good times and bad moments. That’s what sets me apart from the rest: my vulnerability. I’m not afraid nor ashamed to let my listeners know when things are not going in my favor. My listeners know if Kendall got through it, I can, too. I’m an independent hip-hop label owner with over 13 major releases. I’m most proud of running this label and being a business owner.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I am reaching out to like-minded individuals and working with people with the same goals as you. Over the years, I learned from my own mistakes and watched where others have failed. When contacting potential mentors, specify what you want to know or achieve. Attend networking events, conferences, and meetups.
