Today we’d like to introduce you to Wilbur McKesson.
Hi Wilbur, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for sharing your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started wanting to write in 2010, but I needed to figure out how to get started. My Aunt, who wrote novellas, helped me get started and walked me through the process. I published my first action-thriller novel, Insertion, back in 2022. From there, the process was easier, helping me to release my sequel novel, Retribution, on June 14th of this year. I’m editing my third novel in the same series while an officer in the US Coast Guard.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Getting started was tough because I didn’t even know where to begin. I needed to figure out who to send the book to and the steps in the process; I didn’t know anything about agents or the top publishing houses. The process became much easier after talking with my Aunt, who helped smooth out the wrinkles. Another challenge was my father’s passing because he never even witnessed my first book being published. This and my Aunt’s passing last year were rough, but the support system I’ve had from friends and family has been excellent.
I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m an author and am also employed by the US Coast Guard. I’ve been in for almost 14.5 years. I specialized in maritime law enforcement when I was enlisted, and now I’m an officer working in the Emergency Management division. I’m known for being charismatic, funny, and outgoing. I love trying new things and traveling around the world. Having been to over 25 countries, I’m proud of my accomplishments: two novels and working on number three. My drive and willingness to succeed set me apart.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I love talking to people and getting to know them. I’ve been approached a couple of times by strangers who recognize me because of my novels, and it’s fantastic. I love snowboarding, scuba diving, and playing golf in my spare time.
