Hi Demetrius, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started my professional tutoring service as a student at The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Hollywood, CA. I had already studied at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA by then for a degree in math and engineering. During my time there, I would host study halls for the students in my calculus courses, so when I was enrolled at AADA years later, I used that experience as an educational guide (and my love of math) when my teachers hired me to tutor their sons. After I graduated, professional tutoring became a service I could offer to help support me and a young family while I built an acting career. My tutoring service became more consistent than my acting through word of mouth from satisfied clients. Over years of operation, my business spread and became a household name in the most competitive schools in L.A. and Burbank, CA. Returning to my hometown to bring this high-quality service to Memphis has been an arrival for me and my city, as I see the differences I’m making with students and families here.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As with most big undertakings, it wasn’t always a smooth road. When no one knew who I was in Los Angeles, securing clients was a challenge as an anonymous tutor outside of my art school’s safety nest. In these early days, I had to meet people wherever they were with their families. I had to introduce myself and offer my services without them knowing me. And even after I had some clients, it took years of leaner work hours before my name began to be shared regularly enough to keep me in business.

We offer tutoring in all subjects, K through 12, specializing in Advanced Mathematics and SAT/ACT Prep. For us, it’s never just about the grades. It’s about life. At Good Spirit, we know that how our students do school matters. It impacts the way they live later in life. We believe in the power of every student. We see and patiently hold the vision for the bright future ahead of them. We transform the student’s performance by renewing their perspective of their challenging subject(s).

What makes me happy is seeing the breakthroughs happen for other people. For the most part, mostly, our dreams are beneficial for the planet. So, as we attain them, a little more healing is happening in life.

- Students with a pre-existing IEP: $650 for a Care Package (10 hours)
- Elementary level: $65/hr or $550 for a Care Package (10 hours)
- Middle school & High school level: $75/hr or $650 for a Care Package (10 hours)
- Advanced Placement level: $85/hr or $750 for a Care Package (10 hours)
- SAT & ACT Prep: $100/hr or $900 for a Care Package (10 hours)
