Today we’d like to introduce you to Amari Wilson.
Hi Amari, I’m so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Music has influenced my life beyond the physical realm. The melodies, vibrations, and frequencies were a form of healing from a very early age. I practiced the Flute and Piccolo for 10+ years, which catapulted me to being surrounded by artists, producers, and DJs. About a year ago, I decided to learn about the art of DJing to deepen my musical practice, and surprisingly, I caught on quickly, thanks to my music education. It became a joyful activity, and I decided to keep that joy.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, but I think that is the beauty of DJing. It’s a unique experience that is chosen. For me, having severe anxiety is one of my bumps in the road. It’s kind of like having imposter syndrome. You will know your journey is going great and improving, but that voice inside your head can be a constant battle. This is why I prioritize mental health because it is very easy to cycle through unhealthy habits that come with nightlife.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an explorative DJ focusing on House, Jersey, Drum + Bass, Hip Hop, & Dance. When I perform or create mixes, I love to tell a story; I want the audience to feel an array of emotions on the dance floor. I have performed at many local venues, such as Memphis Listening Lab, 901 Growlers, and Stick’ Em, and I have been featured on Chameleon Radio on WYXR 91.7. what sets me apart is that I am fearless in playing songs people haven’t heard. One of my goals this year is to bring back the discovery of music on the dance floor; as long as the vibes and energy are right, love for music will always win.
Have you learned any exciting or essential lessons due to the COVID-19 crisis?
I learned that you will always need more preparation to start something. Living in the moment and basking in joy and those sweet moments of life is important.
