Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Kortz.
Hi Jennifer, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, let’s briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
Having a business degree and working in the corporate world for the last 20 years, I’ve gained lots of knowledge and insight. Despite my success, I’ve always needed a creative outlet for balance. I‘ve dabbled in various hobbies, including painting, jewelry-making, and photography over the years.
When Covid hit, I found myself starting a new chapter in life. This significant change in life, along with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, propelled me to find a hobby with the potential to turn into a successful business. During this time, I became intrigued by permanent jewelry. I learned as much as I could and realized it was something I could be passionate about while having some fun.
I found a reputable trainer where I learned things like the importance of using argon gas, the difference in materials and equipment, proper sizing and techniques. I researched ways to stand out in the industry while mastering the technique of welding and the nuances of permanent jewelry application. Although the skill of permanent jewelry application is relatively easy, I wanted to build a legitimate business, provide expert service and beautiful pieces of jewelry that last. After receiving my certification, I spent a few months practicing and mastering everything while simultaneously setting up the business side. I formed my LLC, obtained insurance, licenses in TN and MS, and that’s when Delicately Bonded Permanent Jewelry was born.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been surprisingly smooth which I attribute to the training I completed, along with my business acumen. The training helped me be confident in my work and eliminated the guesswork. Where it has been most challenging is navigating the business side of bookkeeping, sales tax filings, and standards in an industry that is mostly unregulated. In an industry with no clear rules or guidelines, I committed myself to follow best practices and maintain quality-standards that aren’t necessarily uniform across the world of permanent jewelry. Because of the lack of standards and regulations, I find consumers are unsure of the quality and expertise you want to look for when purchasing jewelry that can’t be removed and is constantly exposed to the elements. With this added challenge, I strive to inform and educate consumers along the way.
I appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Delicately Bonded Permanent Jewelry?
As a jewelry artist, I specialize in crafting custom-designed jewelry pieces that are tailored to my clients’ preferences and needs. I take pride in working with high-quality and tarnish-resistant materials, such as 14k gold filled and 925 sterling silver, to ensure the longevity of the jewelry. My clients have a wide range of choices when it comes to selecting the type of jewelry they want, including bracelets, anklets, rings, toe rings, necklaces, and even waist chains. With around 50 chains and various charms and connectors to choose from, the possibilities are endless. For those who are hesitant about committing to a permanent piece of jewelry, I offer the option to include clasps. Additionally, I can provide laser engraving services, which can either be pre-designed or something that the customer comes up with themselves. This, in addition to my large selection, is something that sets my business apart and creates a truly unique experience for my clients. I offer my services through pop-up shops, private and corporate events, and in-home or individual appointments. I take pleasure in seeing the finished products of my client’s style and imagination, and I am committed to delivering a personalized and enjoyable experience for each of my clients.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Since I started offering appointments, I’ve been incredibly fortunate, and I’m almost at my capacity for the number of appointments I can handle alone. Some may view permanent jewelry as a passing trend, but I beg to differ. We all love to accessorize with jewelry, often paying exorbitant prices for cheap, plated jewelry that chips and fades. Clasps, too, have a way of always presenting themselves and ending up where you don’t want them. We relish the freedom to express ourselves and be unique. We revel in having control and the ability to get exactly what we want. Permanent jewelry offers customers precisely what they can’t get with store-bought jewelry without paying a premium price at a traditional jewelry store. Plus, gold-filled and sterling silver are more affordable in today’s economy. Permanent jewelry is timeless and versatile, suitable for any occasion. As for Delicately Bonded Permanent Jewelry, I’m exploring avenues for expansion. While the specifics are yet to be determined, it could involve a strategic partnership or the establishment of a brick-and-mortar location, offering a variety of exciting offerings for our discerning customers.
