Today we’d like to introduce you to Porter Alexander Tynes, III.
Hi, Porter Alexander; thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
When reflecting on the inception of my real estate venture, I’m reminded of a poignant saying from my high school secretary, Ms. Avery Lewis: “Dreams can take you places you have never been before.” Back then, becoming a real estate agent was my fervent dream. The journey towards establishing my real estate enterprise was driven by my conviction that everyone should have the opportunity to realize the dream of owning a home and feel the pride of homeownership. I recognized that homeownership wasn’t merely about having a roof overhead; it represented a pathway to wealth and stability for individuals and their families. Motivated by this belief, I was resolute in my mission to positively impact my community by assisting others in achieving this dream. Yet, my aspirations transcended individual home searches and local endeavors. I envisioned a future where my family and I could collaborate to invest in properties in Memphis, TN, thereby creating generational wealth while caring for the community I hold close to. I take Memphis wherever I go if you ask any of my friends. However, real estate had the transformative power to uplift lives and communities, serving as a conduit to financial security and prosperity. My ambition extended to securing my own future and empowering families in Tennessee and later to Georgia to thrive.
Would it have been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Navigating the real estate world has been anything but a smooth ride for me, but it has been worth every twist. Picture this: I stepped into the game during a booming period. Sellers were living it up; multiple offers were as common as coffee in the morning, and the prices and rates were terrific. But, as my grandmother used to wisely say, “keep living” because, in real estate, change is the only constant. Fluctuations became my new regular, throwing curveballs left and right. And let me tell you, starting young in this field? It was like jumping into the pool’s deep end without knowing how to swim. I hit the books at 18, became licensed at 19, and suddenly found myself battling doubts about whether I had what it takes. But, amid those doubts, I found my rock-solid support system: my family’s prayers and friends’ unwavering encouragement. They reminded me of my purpose, reassuring me that age was just a number. Who says you can’t make waves in real estate at 19? So, I rolled up my sleeves and took a proactive stance. I dove into education headfirst, hungry to learn more and push forward. I had brokers (Mrs. Deborah Williams & Mrs. Cassandra Bell-Warren) who ensured they were there when I stumbled. I had a great mentor, Mrs. Patsie Harris-Degraff, who ensured education was the pinnacle of my career and that I was well cared for. Lastly, my accountability partner, who happens to be my mother, made sure I remembered who I was. Not only am I capable, but I am a child of the most high. Sure, there were bumps along the road, but each only reinforced my resilience and hunger for growth. And let me tell you, it’s been one heck of a ride, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, tell us more about your work next.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
In this crazy ride, I’ve picked up a gem of wisdom: never play the comparison game. Try to avoid keeping up with the Joneses! Real estate is like a rollercoaster—everyone has twists and turns. But here’s the secret sauce: keep your head down, stay in the loop, learn all you can, and just be good to folks. Ride that wave, and you’ll come out on top every time. After all, staying true to yourself is the actual winning ticket.
