Today we’d like to introduce you to Beatrice Davis. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Beatrice Davis started training in dance at two years old and has continued working on her craft through competitive dance, school dance teams, college dance programs, professional dance companies, and various professional training classes. Performing then led to teaching, and she has been teaching and choreographing in the Memphis area for 13 years. Out of this developed Beatrice Davis Training (BDT), where Beatrice envisioned a studio different from what was offered in this area. Beatrice believes in cultivating a love and desire for training as much as performing on the stage for her dance students, so BDT was created to focus on developing movers with a passion for learning and creating. Some unique traits about Beatrice Davis Training that set it apart are the dance-on-film videos produced and the performance shows that are put on. These dance performance opportunities are designed for dancers to grow as movers, creatives, leaders, teammates, and performers in a way that enriches their dance education. Although BDT is creating a new path for the dance community in the Memphis area, the real goal is to instill community over craft. Beatrice’s hope beyond dance is for BDT to feel like home to dancers all over the community, where they can be loved, encouraged, and respected by all in the studio.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I believe life is not without struggle, regardless of the goal, business, or venture. The battle is unavoidable, but I like to focus on the why behind the hard. Why am I doing this career? Why am I choosing this job day in and day out? To make a difference in kids lives. I am passionate about teaching art, which has carried me through good and bad times, and sharing my love of dance, which has helped me express myself. When you redirect the struggle to the why, the hard isn’t as hard to overcome.
Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a mover, creator, performer, and teacher in the art form of dance. I have a gift for creating pieces and shows that connect with audience members and viewers.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting?
Beatrice’s advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is simple yet profound: keep going. Keep trusting. She held onto her vision for BDT for about 5 years before it became a reality. She knew she had a voice that needed a bigger platform. She recognized the community’s need for a place like BDT, where children could dance and learn in a unique and nurturing environment.
