Today we’d like to introduce you to Dee Goat
Hi Dee Goat, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Honestly, I’ve been an artist all my life. When I was younger I gravitated more towards poetry and visual arts as my main forms of expression. I didn’t really consider being a rapper until I realized that most music is just poetry with a beat. I was a prolific classroom freestyler after that. Even though I was passionate about the craft, I didn’t start taking myself seriously as an artist until 2020 when I dropped my first official single, “Rocket”. Since then I’ve dropped a few mixtapes, had my face on a billboard or two, had some very dope performances, and I’ve met a host of great artists and creatives. Being in those spaces has allowed me to continue to grow and evolve as an artist and a person. What that looks like today is balancing my everyday life with the art. I am working diligently to make sure my next project “Darkshades & Backwoods” can capture the journey I have been on thus far.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The road hasn’t always been a smooth one but, like anything in life there are ups and downs. My biggest drawback initially is that I didn’t feel like I was being myself. I used to try to emulate the artists that my friends listened to because that’s what I thought my path was. It was not until I started fully immersing myself in music(not just as a rapper, but as a producer and a fan) that I started to make the music I like and music that resonated with me. Literally spending days at a time isolated from the world tirelessly working to find my voice. I didn’t go looking for help so there was a lot of trial and error especially when I started to produce my own beats. As an artist, I also find myself craving instant gratification for my creativity and the search of that validation can be draining. I can also be a perfectionist in certain aspects of my creative process and I find myself working tirelessly to make all my ideas into reality. At this point, I find solace in making music that speaks to me and my life. If someone else hears the songs and they like them or resonate with them that is just a bonus.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a rapper primarily, but I also produce and I make clothes as well. I try to dip my hand in a few different pots to get the most out of my creative process. My proudest accomplishment to date is getting an A&R meeting with K Camp’s label Rare Sound. Allowing myself to travel and network helped me make the necessary connections to assess where I am as an artist and gain tools that I can utilize to further my growth and my brand. A close second is seeing my face on a billboard in Time Square in New York. I still smile when I think about that memory. The thing that makes me stand out as an artist is my versatility and my ability to make mood music. In my lane, I feel I can make a song about almost anything and it would be something you could feel. I enjoy being able to connect with a variety of people on numerous levels through song is a well sought after talent I think I possess. At my core, I’m just a kid from North Memphis who loves music. What truly sets me apart is that I am unapologetically myself.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next five years I see there being a lot more personality and individuality amongst performers. There are a lot of unique artist and voices that are coming to prominence right now. I feel like having a strong sense of identity is something that the people are getting back to and it’s exciting to watch and be apart of. It seems like everyone has something new to say or a fresh way of saying something we’ve already heard that resonates with the masses. I feel like there will be more concept albums and more experimental bodies of work.
