Hidden Gems: Meet Schanaque Watson of Watson Writes, LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Schanaque Watson

Hi Schanaque, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
” Whatever Life Throws at Me, I Handle It, Because Survival Mode Doesn’t Stop Even When Everything Is Good!”
Life has a way of testing us, pushing us to our limits, and challenging our very essence. I have faced numerous of trials and tribulations, that has shaped the person I am today.

To begin with I am a proud Memphian, born and raised!!!! Giving special credits to the wonderful neighborhoods of Hickory Hill, South Memphis, and Whitehaven, you have to be from Memphis, MANE to understand. I graduated from Hillcrest High in 2009. My educational journey continued when I enrolled at Lane College in 2009 then I later transferred in 2011 to The University of Memphis .where I obtained a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal & Criminology, along with two minors in African &African American Studies and English in 2013. In 2016, I received a Master of Public Administration Degree from Strayer University.

During childhood I was involved in church activities, including the Young People’s Division, Children’s Choir, Bible Knowledge Bowls, and Black History Knowledge Bowls. I even took the initiative to organize my own Black History Play within the church at a young age. I also wrote poems that were published in our local paper, The Commerical Appeal, Kid’s Appeal Section. In addition, I was a Girl Scout, a ballet dancer for seven years, and played the piano for eight years. My journey to getting my own money and very first paycheck was at the age of 14 when I became a Junior Counselor at Southside Boys and Girls Club, at the time which was located in South Memphis. That one paycheck set the foundation, for me to start getting my own money.

Fighting Against Conformity

I have always been an individual who stands firm in my beliefs, even when it means being overlooked for positions or opportunities because I refuse to conform. I would not agree with the majority just for the sake of fitting in, and this often cost me dearly. But staying true to myself has been non-negotiable, even when the world tried to silence my voice.

Homelessness and Financial Hardship

There were times when life’s hardships led to homelessness. I’ve known the pain of having nowhere to call home and the desperation that comes with financial instability. I remember a particularly moment when I had only five dollars left on my card and I had to choose between food and gas to get to work. I bought bread, bologna, and Kool-Aid, and ran my card as credit at the gas station to fill up my gas tank. Over drafting my account became a necessary survival skill. These moments taught me invaluable lessons in resilience and resourcefulness.

Grieving the Loss of Loved Ones

Losing my biggest support system—my grandmother, my uncle, and my grandad—was a series of devastating blows. Their absence left a void in my heart, a void that will never truly will be filled. Therefore, I spent most of my 20s mourning their loss, trying to navigate life.

One of the most defining moments of my life was experiencing a miscarriage. This heartbreaking loss profoundly shaped my views on relationships and who I chose to let into my life. It was a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of surrounding myself with genuine, supportive people.

Survival and Resilience

Despite the numerous hardships, I have always found a way to survive. My journey has been one of incredible resilience, where survival skills became a necessity. Every challenge, every heartbreak, and every moment of despair was met with an unwavering determination to keep moving forward.

Therefore, in 2022, I started Watson Writes, LLC. My business consisted of Estate Planning for underserved and underrepresented communities who are often forgotten about and Grant Writing for Small Businesses and Nonprofit Organizations. Well, life took a turn, in 2023 when I received an email asking did I know anyone who would like to become A Grant Reviewer.

As, I tell people I’m ALWAYS MAKING SOME MONEY !!! A real quick back story, I had been a Grant Reviewer since 2020. I told a few of my friends that I was making income from reviewing federal grant applications and nonprofit agency grant applications., however , like anything new it sounded strange to them. Well in 2023, I created a class called “GET PAID TO READ! GET PAID TO REVIEW!” This was the time I was able to get people together, so they could make money too! I had to create a “catchy phrase.” to capture individuals attention, and let’s just say IT HAS WORKED!!.

Year To Date, I have trained people over 80 people in person and online how to make money, by just reading. Let me make it clear the average salary for a grant reviewer is between $53,336 to $ 67,706 per year. I mean you do not have to use your gas to go to work, put on clothes, you get to sit at home and honestly just read and review. Last year, for example I reviewed 12 grants and made $2,600.00 without leaving home. If that doesn’t convince people I’m sure this will, I currently work as a contracted Technical Assistant Provider (Technical Reviewer), making $50.00 an hour.

However, I have people who have taken my class that reviewed enough grants that they were able to purchase a car, pay their property taxes, and even start building up their savings. Taking my class, utilizing the tools I am given to you doesn’t just set you up for one time it can set you up for years. Remember, I have been reviewing for years, and I honestly never worry if I am going to review again, because I know I am. I’m in the REVIEWER REGISTY POOL.

To wrap everything up through it all, my story. my ambition, my thrive, my determination, my I’m going to find a way to make some extra income is now helping other people make the extra income too. AND THAT MAKES ME HAPPY!!!!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Like I mentioned before, life is hard within itself. I will be transparent, when I saw caskets close on people who loved me the most. the people I could call on for anything…..that became my hardest obstacles. Don’t get me wrong, I have endured so much in my life, however trying to live a life feeling normal when you have buried your loved ones……never actually feels normal again.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
JUST CALL MS. GET PAID TO READ !!!! HAHA…
