Today we’d like to introduce you to Oskar Murphy
Hi Oskar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started off as a dog bather for a corporate salon in New Orleans. I quickly realized I loved the job. I worked my way up to dog grooming and within 2 years I was the salon manager. It was during my time as salon manager I began my transition and started HRT. With the support of my fellow groomers I changed my name to Oskar. After 6 years in corp grooming, I moved over to groom for a large rescue in NOLA called Zeus’. My dreams for my own grooming salon, Krewe Du Groom began to come to fruition. I travel the country going to dog grooming expos and taking private lessons from Master groomers. Fully immersing myself in education and love for what I do. In late 2023 I returned to my hometown of Memphis and with me I bring my dream of what I want Krewe Du Groom to be. My ultimate goal is to own a salon entirely employed by LGBTQIA+ dog groomers, a safe space for both clients and employees. I would love to train future dog groomers and help marginalized people get started in a gainful career they love.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thankfully the support has been louder than the hate. I’ve received a couple hateful emails and texts to my business information. And sometimes hateful comments on my Facebook business page. Other than that the struggle is what I assume most entrepreneurs face, funding and investment. I’m working out of a spare room currently and hoping for a storefront by the end of 2025.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a dog groomer, my favorite type of grooms being poodles and the little ones like Maltese, Shih Tzu. I’m known for my unique appearance, goofy albeit awkward personality and my passion for what I do. I’m most proud of how far I come. I have multiple certifications from a variety of courses, I’m registered with both the NDGAA and ISCC. What sets me apart? The lengths I go through for furthering my grooming education, how hard I’ve worked for what I have and how hard I’ll continue until my dream is achieved.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’d say some people might be surprised that I am transgender , how ever I live that part of myself out in the open. I’m visible for not just myself but all of the community including those that can’t be.
