Today we’d like to introduce you to Norman Reid
Hi Norman, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Throughout my life, my family has always had an interest in photography. My mom always carried around a small silver digital camera with her, and as I grew up I watched both of my sisters fall in love with photography, and being the obstinate personality that I am, I decided to never even try photography. However, that all changed two years ago. I began serving at my local church, GraceLife Memphis, and I began to help with photography. Ironically enough, I fell in love with doing photography, and specifically capturing the emotion of a moment in a single frame, cementing a fleeting moment into an eternity. While I began with doing church photography, I quickly fell in love and became passionate of photography of all forms, whether that is for a family, business, or anything else under the sun. I believe that life is a gift, and it is art, and I enjoy using my passion of photography to express life, and all of the emotion that comes with it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Any road worth traversing is never an easy one. There have been mounting obstacles along the way, at the beginning of my journey I did not even own a camera, and I was doing photoshoots with any camera I could get my hands on. This ended up being a blessing in disguise however, as It really helped me understand photography and the functions of a camera no matter what brand it is. It forced me to get creative in every possible way, and I count the experience as a blessing. Another obstacle has definitely been finding my own style and identity. I come not only from small beginnings but also the looming shadow of two sisters who are incredible talented in photography, so finding a style that was not only my own and different, but also that I loved has been an uphill battle. Identity comes with experience and time, and as I have been blessed with more and more experience, I feel as though I have finally found my footing.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a photographer! I do not specialize in any one specific “niche” of photography, because I don’t believe in limiting myself. I am experienced in wedding photography, portraits, businesses, and product photography. I think my recent work with Monkees of Germantown and the shoots then have been quintessential in setting me apart, as I have finally and truly found an understanding of a style that I love. Vibrant colors, moody lighting, people expressing life as art, these are the things I would classify as my style, and I love it all the more. That is what I believe sets me apart.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Not to be cliche, but I do believe in giving credit to God, He is my creator and has been my help, strength, and peace through every part of my journey. I would also want to give credit to both of my sisters, Bethany Goodman and Katherine Reid, who have been a well of knowledge for me on my journey and have been willing to share their photography experience with me. Finally, I have found incredible support and help from my church community at GraceLife Memphis, they have helped me more than they know. All of these people have played incredible roles in helping me get to where I am today.
