Meet Daphne Arendt of Daphne’s Sweeties

Today we’d like to introduce you to Daphne Arendt

Hi Daphne, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
When I was little, I used to bake with both my mother and grandmother. As I got older, I started to become interested in the idea of owning my own business, and with the help of my family, we came up with the idea of a monthly subscription baking business. I started selling baked goods to family and friends when I was 12. From there I have expanded who I sell to as well as incorporating custom orders into the services I provide.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Throughout my journey with Daphne’s Sweeties, I have faced many different obstacles. Starting a business during covid as a young teenager was one of the most challenging things I have dealt with. I had to not only go through all the difficulties that come with starting a business but also make sure I was being safe and conscious of covid 19. To overcome this not only meant that I had to limit the people I sold to, but it also meant that I had to constantly change operation style so I could keep my business running. Similarly, I have dealt with physical and mental struggles over the years, which make it hard to juggle all the tasks that come with running a business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Daphne’s Sweeties ?
Daphne’s Sweeties is a monthly baking subscription where I provide opportunities for people to order specific baked goods I’m selling that month. I put all customers on an email list where I then send out the two different baked goods I will be selling. Every costumer can order treats by the box which will typically be one dozen of each baked good. Throughout the years I have sold many different types of Sweeties, but namely I sell things such as cookies, mini bread loafs, biscotti, macarons, and many other treats. Throughout my journey, my confidence and baking skills have grown alongside my business. As my business has gotten larger, I work hard to maintain a close relationship with my customers so that everyone who orders from Daphne’s Sweeties is happy to become a part of our community. It’s important to me that my values are reflected in my business. That’s why I give 10% of my monthly profits to Mid-South Food Bank. I also use reusable plastic containers that my customers exchange out each month to keep trash out of the landfills.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
A big change in our society today is the focus on how the things we put in our body effect our physical and mental health. I hope that this shift is implemented into the food industry and allows for people to get food that is good and good for them. If this idea becomes a focus, this will change the ingredients that companies can use as well as the ways that food is made.
