Hidden Gems: Meet Beverly Anderson of Entrepreneur Training Institute

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beverly Anderson

Hi Beverly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My grandfather taught me a child, “Baby, if you can’t find a job, make you one.” This quote has been my primary mantra for my professional life. I was also taught to get an education and a skill.

I am a business coach and mentor, taught general education and business for 10 years for a local community college, and owns a bookkeeping service. I understand the challenges faces by micro and small business owners, and entrepreneurs. Although I have worked jobs, I always operated by business part-time.

I believe a lot of micro and small businesses suffer because of the lack of basic management skills. These entrepreneurs are focused on DOING the business, but tend to lack the time or knowledge to MANAGE the business. I am also aware that many have been forced to become entrepreneurs or start a ‘side hustle’ as a result of the pandemic, being unemployed, underemployed, or unemployable.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There are always some challenges, especially when working a job and trying to operate a business. Often times it was like working two jobs, because I was. I teach students who face that challenge, to change the mindset…let the job finance the entrepreneur journey. I took the leap of faith several years ago to resign my full-time job and work full-time for myself. I have not regretted one moment.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Entrepreneur Training Institute provides vocational education to participants who enroll in our programs to enhance their current knowledge and skills in Non-profit Development, Personal Income Tax Preparation and Small Business Development. Our target populations are under-employed; long term unemployed; those building skills to re-enter the job market and those starting new business opportunities. Completion and Certification is an opportunity to add the skills needed to become self-sufficient and provide a better quality of life for them and their families.

The four to six week courses are offered twice a year. Virtual and in-person classes are small to provide individual attention to the students. We are proud that more than 20 participants have graduated from ETI since it’s conception.

One thing I am proud of is I got the opportunity to present nationally and internationally including the national Small Business Expo and in Accra Ghana.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The Entrepreneur Training Institute offers virtual courses so our operations were not affected by COVID-19. However, many people found themselves without their regular income or no income. ETI offered a convenient method for learn the basics of entrepreneurship. We were also able to assist some with transitioning their operations from physical to virtual operations.
