Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Joy
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. It was just my mom and I. My father passed away when I was just 12 years old, 10 days after my birthday. Growing up I always was fond of creating or fixing things. I could break down computers and put them back together without any help or directions.
That passion led me all the way into my teenage/adulthood where I found a passion for content creating. I loved showing what I was doing or where I was going, I even loved doing challenges with my boyfriend at the time, who is my husband now. We would record videos doing challenges such as the warhead challenge, or the coke and mentos challenge. We never received too many views for those videos on our YouTube channel but we had fun and that’s what mattered the most.
Today, I have scaled it down to just simple content on my social medias, such as Tik Tok, instagram, and lemon8. I post my 3 cats, food I cook, and just snippets into my life. Everyone can check out my life on my instagram @gamillah_.
I love content creating because it eases my mind and is something that I really love to do. I lost my mother to COVID back in 2021. That was the HARDEST thing that I ever had to go through. Content creation has helped me with some of that grief. I have posted videos of me on tictok talking about how losing her has affected me in hopes that I can help another young female who has lost a parent or both.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has never been a smooth road, especially coming from someone who is sometimes so shy and scared to talk to people. Content creation has really broke me out of my shell, to be more open and transparent to an extent.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
A new hobby that I’ve picked up over the last year has been rug tufting. I’ve gotten pretty good at tufting and hopefully soon am looking to sell some of my rugs. I intend to make my rug tufting into a small business one day.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Advice for people just starting out, DO NOT BE AFRAID to take that leap of faith. If you believe in God, yourself, and the ability to succeed, there is nothing in the way that can stop you.
