Conversations with Mafia 9

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mafia 9

Hi MAFIA, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
[Scott]: With us, it all started in an walk-in closet turned studio in my crib in the summer of 2020. We all just graduated from high school & Covid was at its peak, so we were at the house majority of the summer working on music. That’s also where we downloaded FL Studio for the first time and got to working on our production. Initially, it was just 2 of us (Scott Romosa & Cancer Creek). We were in the studio coming up with different names for our group. I implied I wanted to implement the number “9” in the name somehow, as a tribute and out of respect to my god-uncle, Fathom 9. The two of us were, and still are, heavy Three Six Mafia students, so we simply used that inspiration and slid “Mafia” into the name. I wrote a couple of variations of the name, “901 Mafia”, “Mafia Nine”, “9 Mafia”, but none of those stuck out for real. It ended up being wrote out as “MAFIA 9”, we rocked with it heavy, and that became our name.

[Scott Continued]: I wanted to add 7 more people, totaling out to 9 in reference to our name, but big rap groups was just a no for us to be honest, so we stuck with who we had. We still knew we needed one more person though, to contribute some way. That’s when 6lonelyhearts (a.k.a 6) joined up, and that made 3 of us. He was our graphic designer at first, but dude could free-stlye and we wanted him to take it serious. He did fasho. Not only that, but he taught himself how to make beats in both Garage Band & FL Studio. On top, he taught himself how to record and mix himself. From there, the numbers was settled.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
[MAFIA 9]: It wasn’t the smoothest road for us, you know, life be happening, but as brothers, it’s about how we create that bond & family culture with each other. It’s about us holding each other accountable and keeping the weeds out that try stick to us. How we elevate each other. How we learn from each other.
We here though, and we gone continue to be here.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
[MAFIA 9]: We write, produce, engineer, a little graphic design, just about anything that we see needs to be done, we pick it up and do it.

Our specialties are rapping and production as well, production especially. As a group we’ve produced for ourselves & the likes of local artist like Austin Crui$e on his E.P ‘Shabach !’, tracks 1-4 & 6lonelyhearts with Scott Romosa on Supa Glock Bros E.P, ‘E.P 1.5 (THE RECOIL)’. Cancer Creek produced the M.N.E.I.G remix for Idontknowjeffery, Marcus.901 & Duke Deuce, as well as the highly anticipated additional remix with Glorilla & NLE Choppa soon to come out. Scott Romosa also has production credits for artist ICYTWAT on his album ‘Final Boss’, track title ‘Feel Like Pat’, and has produced for multiple local artist in the city.

What we are most proud of is our flexibility, and our ability to stay true to ourselves and the art of this sh*t & be present with who/where we are both individually and as a group. We keep tight contact with each other, always, and continue to build our structure as we go. We feel like this is what sets us apart as well. The 9 is a culture, and that culture is what keeps us united. We’re us, simple as that.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
[Scott]: Our brotherhood happened naturally, though Cancer & 6 didn’t know each other at first, they rock with it each other like family for real. Me & Cancer have known each other since we were in diapers, legit. We grew up around a village of people that were into art, music, fashion, entrepreneurship the list goes on. Our folks had us in different artistic/communal programs growing up. From plays and live performances, to art shows and sports, we’ve been active since we were kids. All of that just fell together to form MAFIA 9.
