Today we’d like to introduce you to David Yancy
Hi David, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve been passionate about art for as long as I can remember. As a hyperactive child, my mom noticed that drawing was the only activity that could truly keep me focused. She supported and nurtured that interest, which helped me develop my skills over time.
Today, I continue to pursue my love for art through painting, creating murals, and tattooing. I’ve channeled this passion into my work at Ink Therapy Tattoo shop, where I not only create art but also mentor other artists and provide a welcoming environment for everyone to experience tattooing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth journey. I see my life as a book with many chapters, some of which have been quite challenging. I’ve had to restart several times due to struggles with alcoholism and drug addiction. Those periods were very difficult; I experienced homelessness and felt hopeless, and during that time, I was hardly creating art. I had lost touch with my love for myself and others.
However, I’ve been clean for 10 years now. I’m deeply grateful to the social workers, family, and friends who supported and encouraged me to reconnect with my true self and reignite my passion for art.
As you know, we’re big fans of Ink Therapy. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Ink Therapy is a tattoo shop located at Hollywood & Broad Ave in the art district. We’ve been recognized as the best tattoo shop in Memphis by the Memphis Flyer.
Our specialty is bringing your ideas to life. What sets us apart is our diverse and dedicated staff who genuinely care about their work.
I’m particularly proud of our community initiatives. We host a free creative meetup called the Clandestine Creative Club every Thursday from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. It’s open to everyone who wants to create art and network. Additionally, we organize art shows, workshops, and flea markets.
We pride ourselves on offering top-notch services and providing a safe, welcoming space for everyone. Our shop is not just for tattoos—it’s a hub where people can hang out, create, or find someone to talk to.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was living in Japan
