Meet Kyla Plummer of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyla Plummer

Hi Kyla , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was very insecure and self conscious growing up due to a lot of outside criticism and bullying from family and peers. It was a struggle to have self love when everyone had their own opinions of me that echoed in my mind daily. Being insecure is not a fun or light experience and I wanted to no longer feel that way. So, I got into fashion to shift the focus. I believed if I wore a cute outfit, then no one would be focused on my acne, forehead size, or my smile. It worked! So many people fell in love with the vibrant colors I wore with the unique purses and accessories. I still struggled with my self- esteem for a while due to comparison being the thief of joy. It made me question if I was doing enough when I would see peers who I physically admired. Over time, I gained more and more confidence as I expressed myself through fashion. Today, I love myself and fashion more than ever. I’m just here to spread that with other girls who may have felt how I felt. Learn to love yourself and enhance the things you may not love as much. So many girls have been influenced by my style and growth that they engage with me on my social media platforms and share their similar experiences!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A very big struggle that is affecting me now that I’m a little older, is the loss of a parent. A lot recently, I have been distant from social media which affects my growth and interaction, however, I haven’t been able to create content due to my mental health not being at its best. In addition to my mental health not being up to par, it can lead to me not getting dressed up and pampered. I find myself too deep in my feelings to even get out of the bed to record or set up a camera. However, I am pushing through! I won’t drown in my emotions- I just took some time off.

On the other hand, I dropped out of college. That was a hard decision when you know you’re going to disappoint all those around you, but I was proud of myself for finally making a decision that “I” wanted to make for MYSELF! I will say that I have experienced a lot of disappointment not being where I expected and knowing it comes with a lot of “I told you so”s and “you should’ve stayed in school until you got it all figured out” but I’m trusting the process and not giving up on myself and my passions.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have ventured into many fashion areas to see what truly sparks my interests. I have done personal styling, YouTube try on hauls and look books, TikTok and Instagram grwm, Photoshoots, and even participated in a fashion internship where I’m learning modeling and sewing techniques! Honestly, I’m not sure what has my heart yet the most. Being in my 20s is the beauty of it all because this is the time to discover it! I created a YouTube channel, K. Nicole’s Closet, because so many people knew me from doing clothing hauls on Snapchat! I would post all of the clothes I bought and outfits I created on my story. I got so popular for it that I created a private story just for the girls that wanted to see what was in my closet and even shop out of it! It became so exciting for me to do and share with others that I decided to create my YouTube channel. That is what I was originally known for. I believe the unique thing about me is that I am truly myself. Yes I am inspired by others and certain trends influence my style, but I create outfits that only I have worn. Of course there’s matching sets and popular looks, but I’m pretty sure it’s some looks I have created that includes my own twist. I love to do this thing where I match my outfits with my vibrant hair colors! I think the girls like it too. I’m so proud of my growth! I literally used to cover my face in pictures or turn my back. Now, here I am with 197 pictures on my page and they all ooze nothing but confidence and girly fashion. I have also been a part of so many photoshoots that I creative direct and style for content that I share all over my page. I try my best to stay true to myself because it’s so easy to fall victim of every trend and idea shared on social media that you don’t know what makes you YOU.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
