Today we’d like to introduce you to Semir Ahmed
Hi Semir, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Hey! My name is Semir Ahmed but I go by AWOL. I started my journey into photography when I was in high school. I used to take selfies using my father’s Canon EOS camera and post them on Instagram during my junior year. However after that phase I didn’t pick up another camera until 3 years later in my sophomore year at the University of Memphis. Then I bought a Sony A6100 Mirrorless camera, which I still use to this day, for the purpose of making short films. I was inspired by my friend’s Kainonaut’s short film for his Jet Set Sona challenge. However, by chance I decided to bring my camera to my cousin’s Esmod performance and took pictures. This started a habit of me bringing my camera with me to any musical performance I went to. From doing that I built connections with multiple musicians.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly so far the only bumps in the road I’ve had is building a consistent flow of clients and with phone cameras being good nowadays a lot of artists suffice with just photos done with phones. I’ve been trying to create a unique value that comes with my photography. Another challenge of mine is my social battery. I can burn out easily and not want to go out for weeks.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a photographer. I photograph stills of musicians, whether it is performances, studio sessions, behind the scenes, etc. I’m known for my high energy photographs of performances that bring a unique viewpoint that you could only get while being in the performance. What I’m most proud of are the photographs I took of Esmod and 901aura’s performance at the Delta Fair 2024. The lighting of the stage was immaculate and those two buddies of mine, I’ve worked with multiple times before and we synergise very well. What sets me apart from other photographers is that if the mood ain’t right for the event I’m going to get it right. I’ll be the life of the party and capture the moments of it.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned along my journey is that networking through people is a must along with deepening your relationship with people, and not just running through clients, but building that bond. I try and build a friendly relationship with all of my clients, especially if they are cool people, it just happens naturally
