Conversations with Dominic Middleton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominic Middleton

Hi Dominic, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
What’s up mane! My name is Dominic Middleton. I was born and raised here in Memphis, TN (North Memphis) and I love my home city so much and wear it with pride. Growing up, I’ve always been a fan of superheroes. My introduction to it was Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue when I was about 4 or 5 years old. From there, my love for superheroes has grown into what I love doing today which is cosplaying. I started cosplaying (officially) back in 2018. I cosplayed first at the Memphis Comic Expo as it was my second time attending the con. The previous year was my first experience at Memphis Comic Expo and it inspired me to get into cosplaying. Seeing all the wonderful and excellent cosplayers sparked my interest into doing so and I thought to myself, “Why not and try it out.” That next year in 2018 was when I officially made my debut as a cosplayer cosplaying as one of my favorite superheroes, Mr. Fantastic. I was nervous at first since it was my first time cosplaying but everybody was so nice and encouraging and gave me endless compliments on my cosplay (also helped that I’m 6’5 so it fits the character very well haha!). From then on, I continued my journey of cosplaying from there and cosplayed various characters from different franchises.

Streaming I started back in 2020. Of course, when you think of 2020, you think of the pandemic. Everybody was stuck at home with barely nothing to do. When the pandemic started, I had almost nothing to do at the house except read my comics (which was fine). That’s when I came up with the idea of getting back into playing video games as I have not played video games in over 10 years. Luckily enough, the Playstation 5 came out that year and I was one of the first ones to snag it. And in November of that year, I started streaming on Twitch. Streaming has opened several doors but most importantly, connecting with people from across the world and building a community all throughout our love of gaming.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Thankfully, this journey has been pleasant. Only struggles that I can think of is con crunching to get a cosplay exactly right or building up my network when it comes to streaming.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a content creator. My niche is in cosplaying and streaming which is what I’m known for. Thankfully, I have had many moments in my journey that I am proud of from receiving compliments from celebrities and comic creators alike. But one moment I am most proud of is when I officially made the cover of not one but two Marvel Comic covers as Captain America. I still can’t believe it to this day as it is still a surreal moment to me and one I will cherish for the rest of my life. I mean, who can say they have been on a Marvel comic? Twice!

What do you like and dislike about the city?
There’s so many things that I love about Memphis. From the people, the culture, the food, the hospitality, the history, the music. There are so many likeable qualities about Memphis. I could probably write a book about how much I love Memphis and what it means to me but let’s keep it short and say that “I love Memphis.”

I think what I least about the city is the way that it is perceived. Yes, we tend to be in the media for negative things but we Memphians know that we are so much more than that and the city has so much to offer and for people to see and experience.
