Life & Work with Anna Kate Williams of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Anna Kate Williams

Hi Anna Kate, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Jackson, MS, and have always loved caring for children and being a part of their childhood. I babysat for a lot of the same families throughout high school and when I would come home over breaks in college. I attended nursing school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson and was able to continue babysitting. Nursing school can be extremely stressful, so I always took any chance I could to spend time with fun and carefree children whom I had grown to love. Parents would often tell me they loved the fact I was studying to be a nurse one day. It made them feel safe. I valued the relationships I was building with these families and the peace of mind I was able to provide parents. Once I started my full-time job, I quickly learned that I was unable to babysit as frequently as I was while I was in school. I still wanted to provide care to these families somehow. So in May of 2022, I started Nurse Nanny.

Nurse Nanny is not only a babysitting company, but a tight-knit community. We are a group of young women who are passionate about healthcare and have a love for children. I started Nurse Nanny for fun with just a few sitters (including myself and my mom), not sure if it would take off. Now we have over 50 sitters, 3 locations, 1 franchise, and a new addition- Nurse Granny (elderly home care).

Nurse Nanny Memphis is our newest location and it is run by Grace Parker. Grace is also an RN and previously babysat for Nurse Nanny Jackson. She is passionate, has strong leadership skills, and understands the business model and our vision. I cannot think of a more qualified young woman to run this branch of Nurse Nanny. I know Nurse Nanny Memphis will thrive.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
One of the hardest things for me has been learning about and understanding business as, of course, my training was all science and healthcare related. As Nurse Nanny continued to grow my dad and others had to teach me about excel, quickbooks, and financial statements. I didn’t even know the difference between gross revenue and net income! I have come a long way but still face challenges and have questions.

I am fortunate to have received a tremendous amount of love, support, advice, and constructive criticism from my friends and family throughout this entire process. I could not have done this alone. Of course, there have been obstacles along the way that I could have never anticipated. But I have found that the best way to face them is, to be honest when you do not have the answers, have the humility to ask for help, and use patience to respond graciously.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a registered nurse at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where I work in surgery. I have recently joined the Cardiovascular surgery team. I truly love my job and feel honored and privileged to be able to walk into such a special place every day and serve these children. Something that sets me apart is that I do not let pride get in the way of my work. I am not afraid to ask for help when I am unfamiliar with a surgery I haven’t seen before. I have learned that this will only make me a better nurse and more approachable coworker. I also believe this is one of the qualities that has made me a great leader in my business.

What matters most to you?
My faith is what matters most to me as it gives me purpose and makes all my other relationships richer. It drives me to lead this business with kindness and integrity, act as a team player to my coworkers, admit when I fail, strive to choose patience over anger, speak with courage and clarity, and ultimately live a life with Jesus at the center. Of course, I often get distracted and have to stop, slow down, and remind myself of what is truly important.
