Rising Stars: Meet Imani Nathaniel of Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Nathaniel

Hi Imani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My passion for all things beauty go waaaay back. From seeing my mom get herself ready each day, I knew it was something I wanted to do and eventually fell in love as the years went on. In high school, I took cosmetology and before I knew it, not only was I doing my own makeup but all the other girls who came to class to get their brows filled in. I loved the way their confidence shot up even more after they left my chair. That was the moment I knew what I wanted to pursue being a makeup artist. I went to cosmetology after high school and got my first job at a makeup counter. I gained clients and since 2016, I’ve been a professional makeup artist. I went on to do makeup for weddings, special events and so much more. I had the pleasure of servicing Leandria Johnson, “Lil G” from the group Silk and most recently Maranda Curtis. It’s safe to say that the Lord really provided a way for me to experience what I love to do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
You know, there’s always going to be ups and downs. That’s just life! One of my biggest struggles was towards the beginning when I was first starting. As a new makeup artist, I wanted to be as available and relatable to my clients when it came to anything they wanted or needed. This caused me to settle in my prices as well as my time. As time went on, I perfected my craft ( and I still am ) and learned the value of my time and how I served my clients. I realized that no matter what, my loyal clients will find me and stick with me, even as I progress. I’m so grateful for all of them. They’re like family to me. I will encourage any new makeup artist to stay true to the process and who you are!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is Imani and I’m a makeup artist as well as an upcoming content creator. I specialize in all things beauty but mainly in makeup artistry. One of my most proudest moments has to be being taught by the best cosmetology teacher, the late Kristy Brownlee. She gave me an extra push on my confidence when it came to being myself as I pursued makeup. Something they sets me apart is my love for God. It shines through my artistry as each client gets to experience me. I believe that the Lord gave me this gift to bless others and so I will always honor Him. So when you do get some time to sit in my chair, not only will you experience makeup and a good time, but I know the Lord will show up too.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The beauty industry is on the rise and I believe that it’s going to always evolve for the better. For me, I would love to have launched my own lipstick and lip gloss line. I love a good lip combo and I think everyone should have their perfect lip combo always! I’d love to be a full time content creator because I enjoy it so much.
