Community Highlights: Meet Amin & Kimberly Waajid of YO SKINCARE PRODUCTS

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amin & Kimberly Waajid

Hi Amin & Kimberly , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
YoSkincare: A Legacy of Empowerment, Expertise, and Purpose-Driven Beauty

YoSkincare’s story is one of resilience, expertise, and an unwavering commitment to building a better future for both their customers and their family. Founded by Amin and Kimmy Waajid, this natural skincare line represents decades of experience in the beauty industry, driven by a philosophy of self-reliance and community empowerment.

Amin Waajid, a trailblazer in the natural hair care industry, was instrumental in growing his sister Taliah Waajid’s brand into a multi-million-dollar business. He also played a pivotal role in expanding the Taliah Waajid brand’s World Natural Hair Health and Beauty Show. Under his strategic and relentless marketing direction, the event grew from a modest gathering into one of the largest natural beauty events in the world, attracting over 30,000 attendees and more than 300 exhibitors. This show became a springboard for many of today’s world-renowned natural hair care brands, including Shea Moisture, Mielle Organics, Camille Rose, The Mane Choice, Jamaican Mango & Lime, Fro Babies, Jane Carter Solutions, Mixed Chicks, As I Am, Curls, Miss Jessie’s, O.R.S., Aunt Jackie’s, Cream of Nature, Uncle Jimmy’s Men’s Grooming Products, Palmer’s Men’s Grooming Products, and many more.

Amin’s extensive efforts in marketing the natural hair care category and product development helped position these brands as industry leaders, transforming the natural hair care landscape and creating countless opportunities for entrepreneurs to thrive.

While Amin’s expertise lies in hair care, his wife Kimmy has long been passionate about skincare. Raised by Jamaican parents, including a mother who was both an esthetician and owner of a skincare product line (Corrective Skin Care), Kimmy gained early exposure to natural skincare remedies. Her hands-on experience and innate ability to educate consumers about the importance of natural ingredients and healthy skincare regimens make her invaluable in the skincare industry. Kimmy always dreamed of creating her own line of natural skincare products to offer solutions to common skin problems like acne, eczema, psoriasis, blemishes, and dry, oily, and sensitive skin—using nature’s most potent ingredients.

Together, Amin and Kimmy launched YoSkincare, blending their strengths in hair care and skincare under the guiding principle of “Do-For-Self”—building opportunities through self-reliance, hard work, and entrepreneurship. YoSkincare is more than just a business; it’s a platform for community empowerment. The company emphasizes human sustainability, from sourcing ingredients like African Black Soap from small communities in Ghana—providing jobs, education, and economic support—to giving back locally through initiatives such as feeding the hungry.

At the heart of YoSkincare is the Waajid family’s commitment to building a legacy for their children. Their two daughters, Kamilah and Najiyyah, are the driving force behind their mission to create a future built on values of integrity and hard work. “We’re doing this to create a better future for our children,” says Amin. “It’s about leaving a legacy they can be proud of, one built on values, integrity, and the belief that you can create something lasting through your own efforts.”

With an unwavering commitment to quality and purpose, YoSkincare’s natural products, such as the Supa Glo 10 Oil Facial Elixir and African Black Soap with Sea Moss, have quickly gained popularity for their authenticity and effectiveness. Now sold in major retailers like Beauty & Company, the largest beauty supply chain in Memphis, and 46 other beauty supply stores throughout Georgia, Mississippi, and South Carolina, YoSkincare is not only helping people look and feel their best but also staying true to its core values of community, empowerment, and sustainability.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road for us. Amin was incarcerated from the age of 17 to 27, originally sentenced to 40 years. Through relentless determination and fighting for his freedom, his sentence was eventually reduced to 20 years. Those years shaped him, teaching accountability, resilience, leadership, and the importance of second chances. After his release, he threw himself into the natural hair care industry, helping grow his sister Taliah Waajid’s brand and playing a key role in expanding the World Natural Hair Health and Beauty Show, which transformed into a global platform for natural beauty products.

However, the challenges didn’t stop there. In 2018, Amin was involved in a terrible car accident while traveling to the Essence Festival in New Orleans. “It was a life-altering experience that changed the trajectory of our lives.” During recovery, it became clear that we needed to refocus on our passion for faith, health, beauty, and wellness. This led to the creation of YoSkincare, as we realized that we wanted to do something meaningful—not just for ourselves but for our children and future generations.

On Kimmy’s side, growing up with Jamaican parents, including a mother who was an esthetician and owned her own skincare line, gave her invaluable insight into the beauty industry. But even with that background, launching YoSkincare was a learning curve. Kimmy had to find ways to educate consumers on the importance of natural skincare products while balancing the pressures of starting and growing a business.

One of the key challenges we’ve faced together is living by the “Do-For-Self” principle. We believe in building something sustainable through our own efforts, and that means taking on a lot of responsibility ourselves. We’ve faced everything from product development hurdles to sourcing issues, especially when working with small communities in Ghana for our African Black Soap. We’re committed to creating opportunities for those communities, but doing business ethically while maintaining quality and managing logistics is not without challenges.

Another struggle has been balancing family and business. We have two young daughters, Kamilah and Najiyyah, and as parents, our priority is creating a future for them. Managing a growing business while raising children comes with its own set of challenges, but it also strengthens our resolve. We’re doing this for them, and that keeps us focused even when the road gets tough.

In the end, every struggle has been a lesson. We’ve learned to adapt, pivot when necessary, and always keep our core values at the forefront. Those experiences have made YoSkincare what it is today—stronger, more resilient, and purpose-driven.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Finding a mentor and networking effectively can significantly influence your personal and professional growth. Based on our experiences, here are some key pieces of advice:

1. Identify Your Goals: Before seeking a mentor, clarify what you want to achieve. Are you looking for guidance in business strategy, product development, or marketing? Knowing your goals will help you find a mentor with the right expertise.

2. Leverage Existing Connections: Don’t hesitate to tap into your current network. Reach out to friends, family, or colleagues who might know someone in your industry. Personal introductions can create a more comfortable and trusting environment.

3. Attend Industry Events: Participate in conferences, workshops, and networking events related to your field. Engaging in these spaces allows you to meet like-minded individuals, share experiences, and discover potential mentors. For us, being involved in the World Natural Hair Health and Beauty Show opened many doors and connected us with key players in the natural hair and skincare industries.

4. Be Genuine and Approachable: When networking, be authentic. Share your journey and express your passion for what you do. People are more inclined to connect with you when they see your genuine enthusiasm and commitment.

5. Offer Value: Mentorship is a two-way street. Think about how you can contribute to the mentor’s work or interests. Whether it’s offering your skills, insights, or simply being a supportive connection, showing that you can add value can strengthen the relationship.

6. Follow Up and Stay in Touch: After meeting someone you connect with, don’t forget to follow up. Send a thank-you note or an email expressing your appreciation for their time and insights. Keeping the conversation going will help you build a lasting relationship.

7. Be Open to Multiple Mentors: Different mentors can offer diverse perspectives. Embrace the idea of learning from various individuals who specialize in different areas relevant to your journey. This approach can provide a well-rounded support system.

In our experience, networking and mentorship have been vital in shaping YoSkincare and navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship. The relationships we’ve built have not only enriched our business but also helped us grow personally and professionally.
