Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarai Lange
Hi Sarai , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Sarai Lange, a Costa Rican-born photographer who found a second home in the U.S. My journey here started at 18 when I left Costa Rica, a place I still hold close to my heart, to attend school in Texas. That’s where I met and married my wonderful husband, Daniel Lange. Life has blessed us with four amazing children, and, as a Christian, I find my faith in Christ to be the foundation of everything I do. It’s the lens through which I see my life, my family, and my work.
Photography entered my life when I was studying at the Art Institute in D.C. I began my career as a hospital newborn photographer, capturing the first moments of a baby’s life. Those early experiences left a deep impression on me. I connected with families in ways I hadn’t anticipated—not just capturing moments of celebration but also, at times, documenting the most challenging day of a family’s life. I will always remember the families who asked me to photograph their farewells to a child who couldn’t stay with them. Those raw, powerful moments taught me that my role as a photographer went beyond taking photos; I was there to hold space for others’ emotions, capturing memories that would become invaluable treasures.
Those experiences guided me to work with families in a fuller, more celebratory way. Weddings, in particular, captured my heart. They are full of joy, laughter, and sometimes tears, not just from the couple but from everyone who loves them. There’s an unmatched energy in these moments, and each wedding I photograph feels like I’m capturing a piece of someone’s unique love story. It’s more than a job for me—it’s an honor to witness and document these once-in-a-lifetime events.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Life as a wife, mother, and photographer has brought its own unique challenges. My path hasn’t always been easy, especially when it came to growing my family. Each pregnancy was a journey in itself, requiring me to pause my career to focus on the little lives I was bringing into the world. It was a season of stepping back but never stepping away. My love for photography remained strong, and I knew that when the time was right, I would return to my work with even more passion and perspective.
One of the unexpected challenges of my journey has been moving from state to state. Each move is a bit like pressing the “restart” button on my business, as I build new connections, seek new clients, and establish a name in a fresh community. It’s a process that takes time, patience, and persistence.
But through the challenges, moving has also been a beautiful gift. Each new state has given me the privilege of meeting and capturing the lives of incredible families in Arizona, Texas, Wisconsin, Virginia, and now Tennessee. Each family and each location bring something unique, and I get to see my work evolve with every new place I call home. These moves have taught me that growth often happens in those in-between moments, the times when I feel like I’m starting over and rediscovering my “why.”
Though there have been obstacles, I wouldn’t trade this journey. Photography allows me to connect with others on a deep level, and every family I work with reminds me of the beauty in life’s many seasons. Through the lens, I capture not just moments, but the resilience, joy, and authenticity that make each story special.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a wedding and family photographer, and I focus on capturing moments that feel real and meaningful. I specialize in working with couples who see marriage as a deep commitment, not just a party. I love the raw emotions of weddings—not just between the bride and groom but among everyone there who loves them. I also work with families, helping them remember moments that reflect their real connections.
What I’m most proud of is the way my clients feel after a session. They tell me it feels like more than just taking pictures – it feels like they’ve been cared for and seen. That’s really important to me. My goal is for people to walk away with photos that bring them joy and remind them of who they are to each other.
My approach comes from my own experiences. I started out photographing newborns in hospitals, which sometimes meant capturing both the happiest and hardest moments for families. That taught me how powerful photos can be, and it’s something I carry into every wedding and family session I do. I want each session to feel welcoming and genuine, like a small piece of home, no matter where I am.
For me, photography isn’t just a job; it’s how I show people they matter. My faith shapes that approach – I want to serve others, make them feel valued, and give them something lasting.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Memphis for its diversity and the way it feels like a big city with a small-town vibe. There’s this sense that someone always knows someone, which creates a close-knit feeling that I really enjoy. Making connections here comes naturally, and that’s something I truly appreciate.
