Today we’d like to introduce you to Kasondra Brown
Hi Kasondra, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My love for music really started with my dad. He had this incredible voice and loved singing songs by legends like Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye. Growing up, I was surrounded by music—eight of my dad’s brothers were also musicians, so it was part of our family culture. I caught the music bug early, probably around 3 or 4 years old, and from then on, I was hooked. My sisters and I performed at every family gathering, especially during the holidays and reunions. I loved those moments, and I’d always step into the spotlight with my version of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You.’ It’s those early performances that made me realize I wanted to pursue music.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’d say my music reflects a mix of soulful and modern sounds, with a little grit that feels true to Memphis. Being an attractive woman in a still male-dominated industry has brought its own set of challenges. I’ve learned that you need a strong, professional team who believes in you and can represent you well—it’s all about finding people with that ‘go-getter’ attitude who can help open doors. Memphis might be a smaller market, but that also means there’s room to stand out if you have the right support and resilience. The journey’s taught me to build thick skin and keep pushing forward, even though finding a dedicated band has been tough at times.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My music reflects the rich down-home roots of Memphis. The mix of R&B, soul, and blues that’s just so unique to this city. Growing up here, you’re constantly hearing music from legends like Isaac Hayes, Al Green, Johnny Taylor, and Bobby Rush, and their influence is everywhere. Memphis has this ‘City of Blues’ vibe that lets you blend genres naturally, and that’s what I aim to do in my own sound. I love bringing together those soulful, bluesy tones with R&B, creating something that feels like home but is also uniquely my own.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
One of my favorite memories from growing up in Memphis was being the go-to entertainer at family events. Everyone would gather around, and I’d sing for them. Seeing their reactions left such an impact on me. Watching people get emotional, clapping, even shedding a few tears, made me realize the power of music to connect with people. Those moments, along with winning a few talent shows, really sparked my passion and showed me that singing was something I wanted to pursue seriously.
