Today we’d like to introduce you to Elisha Newsom.
Hi Elisha , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Elisha, but my clients call me Plush. Hair runs deep in my family—going all the way back to my grandma Rosemary doing Jheri curl perms, to my aunt doing quick weaves in the early 2000s, and watching my mom do micro braids as her go-to summer style. Instinctively, I’d join in to help them, and over time, I inherited the skill.
As I got older, I started doing my own sew-ins and braids. Through recognition from friends, I gradually began to accumulate what I now recognize as clients—though back then, it just felt like doing a good deed to help my loved ones feel beautiful.
However, as time went on, recognition from strangers began to grow, and before I knew it, I was doing the hair of anyone who gave me a chance. I would post every day on social media and slowly but surely I started to get noticed by different brands and consumers. Thanks to social media and my creativity I’ve grown my brand alone yet pretty far.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Truthfully, hair is one of the most rewarding careers in many ways from helping boost self-esteem and building confidence to creating financial security. However, like many other careers, it has its cons and can take a toll on you mentally.
Although there’s a wide range of creativity involved, you also have to develop other skills like being a content creator, a therapist, a best friend, and more—just to stay on top. Going to cosmetology school while trying to build a clientele took a huge toll on me mentally and physically, but it didn’t take me out of the game.
Staying strong, being creative, and maintaining professionalism will get you far in this industry but it won’t always guarantee a happy customer.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a licensed cosmetologist and the founder of Plushamour, a hair company that specializes in helping women feel confident and beautiful through high-quality, customized hair experiences. I specialize in protective styles, hair care education, and creating a client experience from start to finish. What I’m most proud of is building my brand from the ground up while balancing motherhood and personal growth. What sets me apart is my attention to detail, my deep care for my clients’ confidence, and my belief that beauty is more than appearance — it’s a feeling. I don’t just do hair I help women step into their best self.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Honesty. It’s something we’re taught as kids — that being honest will get you far. But in the hair world, being honest can sometimes put you on the wrong side of the fence. As consumers, people know what they want, and sometimes they aren’t open to hearing what’s best for them. But hair isn’t one-size-fits-all. I’ve learned that honesty is important, but delivery is everything. You have to know how to tweak your language and communicate with clients in a way that educates, respects their vision, and still leaves you proud of the work you’ve done. That balance has been one of my biggest lessons — staying true to my expertise while learning how to connect with people where they are.
