Hidden Gems: Meet Blair Ball of Blair Ball Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Blair Ball.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Blair Evan Ball is a Memphis based sports, event, portrait, landscape and commercial photographer. He’s been photographing for the last 15 years. He is past President of the Memphis Camera Club where he served two years.

He enjoys shooting sports, corporate events, portraits and conducts workshops. When he has free time he has created a great body of fine art images in landscape, nature, mixed media and macro.

His most recent Reelfoot Lake Series is featured in the new Bass Pro Shops Pyramid in Memphis.

He’s photographed 150+ Marathons, Half Marathons, Triathlons, and other running races. He recently passed 1.7 million images taken.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I’m self taught, and so there have been many struggles along the way. To learning my cameras, settings, composition, lighting and the technical. Then I discovered once I had the image, now what?

So I dived into Lightroom to learn how to edit images and now teach both Digital “101” and Lightroom Classes.

Then came running the business, what to charge, what are my expenses, how to market via social media.

Then learning about copyright and licensing of images. Theft has sometimes been a challenge. Most don’t know about copyright law and licensing.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I do a variety of photography. I got started later in life when the business world threw me a curve ball. Never to late to learn new skills. ABL…Always be learning. My father taught me that.

I’m an ex athlete so I started out shooting sports, mostly running events and triathlons. Branched out into corporate events, landscape, macro, portraits & workshops.

What sets me apart is the quality of my work, dependability, my ability to capture the moment and tell the story.

Most proud to have had my work published in numerous publications and by some big brands.

I’ve branched out into conducting in class workshops like Digital “101”, Lightroom, iPhone, I also do outdoor workshops like Florida Birds, Fall Colors, Reelfoot Lake. I’ve added 1 on 1 coaching which is continuing to grow.

Best part they are all small groups 8 or less, in a hands on environment for learning.

What makes you happy?
When I have a free moment from my hectic schedule, I grab my camera and go out photographing. I love what I do.

I’ll look up and say where did 3 hours go?

Same thing when I get time to edit in the digital darkroom & create a unique style for images.

Serendipity Baby! When something happens spontaneously to photograph. People who have been in my classes or workshops know I believe in Serendipity and expect it to happen! Does is always? NO, but most of the time it does and the students get just as excited which makes me happy!
