Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Brown.
Hi Christina, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I always has a love for cosplay I remember when I was a kid watching amine I though to myself how pretty the outfits look and how badly I wish I could wear something like. When I was 26 I reconnected with an old friend from middle school and she was the one to introduce me to the world of cosplay. The first cosplay I did was just a from an anime named “Black Lagoon” I was Roberta and she was Reve. I had so much fun working with her to make the cosplays and work on poses for photos. From there it grew and grew I traveled to different cities to attend conventions and do bigger cosplays. Today I’m not only just a cosplayer but also a streamer and content creator.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Goodness no, I did have a good run for a few years but in 2018 I took on the task of making full body armor from foam. When I go to ABC (Anime Blues Con) a local con in Memphis I do the cosplay contest. That year I wanted to go big so I spent months researching and learning different techniques. So much went wrong with that build. I was a house wife at the time so I would work on cosplays when my kids were off at school and my husband was at working. For the most part it was going good but my cat clawed the foam and made giant claw marks in the foam meaning I had to start over just a week before con so I had to pull all nighters just to finish. I cut corners just get it dont and slept may 3 hour before the contest. Before I could go in for judging my cosplay started to fall apart and I ran to cosplay repair to fix it and in doing so I missed prejudging. I was still able to be in the contest but not in the category I wanted. During the contest my cosplay started to fall apart again and unfortunately there was no way to fix it. I go on stage I do my walk and at the end I didn’t win or place. To make it worse after the contest the judges came up to me and told that if I didn’t miss prejudging I could of at minimum placed if not won the category I wanted to enter. After that i took off my cosplay packed it up and left early. While I waited for my ride I just cried never have I felt so defeated and crushed. After that I took a break from cosplay. While I still dressed up and took pictures I couldn’t work on anything new. 2 years later I decided to jump back into it unfortunately this was 2020 and covid happened. So my brake lasted another 2 years.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Cosplay short for Costume Play originated in Japan and of course made its way to the west. People can cosplay a character from any media games, anime, tv, cartoons, movies etc, but more then just dressing up we also act the part taking on the personality of the character we are cosplaying. To me it’s more than just dressing up, Cosplay is an art a great way for people to be as creative as they want to be. There are people with the skill to bring nearly any character to life. I’m one of the one who sometimes make their own cosplay or buy it if the cosplay is a bit too complex for me to make or I don’t have the time. I love taking on the personality of the characters I cosplay i research the characters my watching what they are in or read it think of it like rehearing a role. From all the characters I’ve done I’m definitely most know for Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil village. I placed 3rd in the cosplay contest at winter remix a few years back. While cosplay is what i do the most I also stream on YouTube and Twitch. i stream whenever I have the time so a few times a week I stared out using a face cam but now I use a PNG and slowly making my way to being a vTuber. The games I stream are mostly whatever I feel like playing at the moment.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite memory is from the late great Library Land. I don’t remember the name of the ride but it’s basically a giant water slide. You climb the stairs to the top sit on a yellow plastic thing they give you and before you can count to 3 they hit a button and off you go. When it was my mom turn she asked the guy to wait before hitting the button because she wanted to brace herself and the man graciously agreed or so we thought. So my mom is sitting there taking a few deep breaths the man said okay I’m gonna count to 3 so he started 1, 2 and before he said three he said to my mom oh look a pretty bird right as my mom turn to look in the direction he was pointing he hit the button and off she went. As she slid all we heard as she descended was her saying you bitch but it sounded like she funny because he voice got further and further away so it was more like YOU BIIIIIII.
