Today we’d like to introduce you to Alana Dent.
Hi Alana, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I didn’t grow up in pageantry—but four months ago, I stepped onto the stage and into a journey that’s changed my life. My first experience was winning a fraternity-sponsored pageant in 2022, but I’ve since leaned fully into this world with faith, confidence, and purpose. I was told that if I covered my tattoos, I’d win—but I chose to show up exactly as I am. And I did win—because God was on my side.
I’m proud to serve as Miss Shelby County, and with that title, it’s my mission to let other young women know that there is a way out, a way to see and breathe again. As a survivor of domestic abuse, I know firsthand the power of reclaiming your voice and your life. My platform is about breaking cycles, inspiring strength, and standing boldly for healing.
Beyond the crown, I’m a Media Strategist for Red Deluxe Brand Development in Memphis, I own a publishing company, and my family operates a college. I already hold one bachelor’s degree and am currently pursuing a second, along with my master’s and doctorate—all at the same time.
My story is one of faith, resilience, and unstoppable determination. Because where you start doesn’t define where you’re destined to go.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but every challenge along the way helped shape the woman and titleholder I am today. I’ve been told multiple times that if I just covered my tattoos—especially my full arm sleeve—I’d have a better chance at winning. I don’t look like the “typical” pageant queen, and for a while, I questioned if I even belonged. But that changed when my mom, the Miss Memphis Organization, and some incredibly supportive women in the Miss Tennessee and Miss America family told me the exact opposite: “Keep your tattoos. Keep your curly hair. Keep being you.”
That encouragement gave me permission to take up space—and it helped me reclaim a confidence I had to fight for. I’m a survivor of sexual assault at both 19 and 21. For a long time, I didn’t know what it meant to love myself, so I ended up in relationships where love didn’t truly exist. I accepted less because I believed I was less. But healing taught me otherwise. I had to learn that self-worth isn’t handed to you—it’s something you rise up and choose every single day.
No, it hasn’t been easy. But it’s mine. And every part of it is proof that you can survive, heal, and shine—without erasing a single part of who you are.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As the Media Strategist for Red Deluxe Brand Development in Memphis, TN, I help bring powerful stories to life through strategic, purpose-driven campaigns. Our agency is known for its work with nonprofits, healthcare, and civic organizations—and I specialize in crafting media strategies that don’t just reach people, but move them. I bridge creativity with impact, ensuring every campaign is rooted in relevance, culture, and results.
Within my family-owned companies, I’m known as the problem solver. When something needs to get done, I figure it out—fast. I don’t work hard just for the sake of it—I work smart, efficiently navigating challenges and offering solutions that push progress forward.
What I’m most proud of isn’t a single title or milestone—it’s how far I’ve come. From surviving abuse to rebuilding my confidence, from earning one degree to now pursuing three at once (a second bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate), my journey is fueled by faith, growth, and grit.
What sets me apart is my ability to think like a strategist and move like a leader. I lead with intention, not ego. I understand the value of purpose over perfection. And whether it’s building brands or breaking barriers, I do it all while staying rooted in who I am—and who I’m becoming.
What’s next?
The future feels incredibly exciting and full of purpose. I’m currently preparing for the Miss Tennessee competition, which takes place June 9th–14th, and I’m fully focused on showing up as the best version of myself—mind, body, and spirit. Representing Shelby County has already been a powerful chapter, and I’m looking forward to continuing that impact on an even bigger stage.
Beyond pageantry, I’m on track to graduate in December with not just one—but three degrees: a second bachelor’s, my master’s, and my doctorate. Education has always been a part of my legacy and my identity, and achieving these academic milestones is a full-circle moment I’ve worked hard for.
Looking ahead, I plan to continue expanding my voice in media, advocacy, and brand development—especially when it comes to creating platforms for women and survivors to be heard, healed, and empowered. Big changes are coming, but they’re rooted in purpose. I’m walking into every room with confidence, clarity, and a crown that represents so much more than beauty—it represents becoming.
