Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay/Rylan Herrada.
Hi Shay/Rylan, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
After high school I went to the UofM for hospitality and resort management but after a year I realized it wasn’t my true calling. After a conversation with an instructor at Plaza Beauty school. I went in for a tour just to see if it sparked my interest. It did! I signed up for school and started 2 weeks later.
After school I joined a local franchise. After 4 years there I knew it was time to move on. The earth heard my thoughts and Caitlin Williams-Puckett(we went to hair school together) sent me a message and asked me to join her team at a locally owned barbershop. I spent 4 and a half years there.
After that I realized I wanted to adventure and trying working for myself.
Through many signs that I was making the right decision, I opened Outer Fades and have been open for 2 years now!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s honestly been pretty smooth. I love a challenge so I kind of see them as fun! Even though I am reluctant to change at first I usually meet them head on.
Moving from franchise to locally owned to owning my own shop were some of the bigger struggles.
Leaving old coworkers has been the hardest part of growing into new experiences but at the end of the day it has been what is best for me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Outer Fades?
Outer Fades is a salon suite located inside Phenix Salon suites in East Memphis. I own and operate the shop solo! I specialize masculine cuts for all gender identities.
While I always strive for a top quality haircut(and do) I think most of my clients will agree that it’s just a good and relaxing time inside my shop.
I really value making you look and feel good but I want to leave a last impression that doesn’t grow out in a few weeks.
A lot of my clients have been with me for many years. We have inside jokes, we have cried together on hard days, we have pushed each other in our own adventures and my personal favorite we have laughed and laughed time after time.
I really aim to make sure by the time you leave the shop that your spirits are high even if you have to go back to reality after.
It’s something I am most proud.
I am a safe space for all people. I great everyone as an individual and understand we are all different but can all relate somewhere along the way as humans.
What does success mean to you?
Success can come in many forms. Achievements, accolades, money, but I think success for me comes from thr passion in your heart.
Finding something you love, enjoying the pursuit and crushing your goals is success.
Nothing makes me for successful than joy.
