Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Sara A. Freites of Collierville

We recently had the chance to connect with Sara A. Freites and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Sara A., thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Are you walking a path—or wandering?
I have a path, but it feels more like I’m wandering. My path takes me in all different directions at times. I never know where it will take me next, so it never feels like a straightaway path.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
First and foremost, my passion is writing. I’m a YA author of a soon to be 3 book series called the “Rise of Midnight” series. This will eventually be a 5 book series as I’m constantly working to expand and making new stories to write for my characters.
I also love to cosplay. I use cosplay as a means for fun, but I also use it to help give back to my community—visiting children’s hospitals in costume as part of a local charity group and birthday party appearances for little girls in my town.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I was, and still am, a big dreamer. I am always dreaming of the next step, the next bigger and better thing, but I have to remind myself of where I am and how far I’ve come. So I find myself romanticizing events in my life, and focusing on the good parts.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Oh yes, many times. I think it’s all part of the process. I just have to remind myself that, when I get close to wanting to give up these days, that I’ve felt that way in the past, and if I had given up when I wanted to then, I would not be where I am today. So, if I gave up today, I won’t get to see where my persistence takes me in the future.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Is the public version of you the real you?
Yes and no. You’re seeing my real personality when you meet me out and about, but I’m a huge introvert, so going out and doing these events, whether it’s book signings or for cosplay, is really draining. I enjoy doing them, but I have to really push myself to get out and do them. So, I’m not as extroverted as I make myself appear. I’m actually very nervous, shy, and self-doubting, but in front of others, I try to be a little more collected.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Yes, without a doubt. I love what I do, and have a passion for it. It’s not about being recognized for me. It’s about doing what I love. If I have fun doing it, or can make someone else’s day, that’s what I’m looking for.
