An Inspired Chat with Martell Washington of Arlington

Martell Washington shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Martell, a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What’s more important to you—intelligence, energy, or integrity?
These elements are all crucial forms of intelligence, as they play a vital role in effective teaching and leadership. Without a solid base of knowledge and understanding, it becomes exceedingly difficult—if not impossible—to impart valuable lessons or guide others successfully. Additionally, energy, particularly the right kind of energy, can be a transformative force in achieving goals. When you harness positive energy, it doesn’t just elevate your own performance; it creates an environment where your entire team can flourish. A cohesive and motivated team, fueled by enthusiasm and a shared sense of purpose, can accomplish remarkable feats that may have seemed unattainable before.

Furthermore, integrity cannot be overlooked. It embodies the principles of honesty and moral uprightness. You must possess a strong moral compass because, without clear values to guide your actions, you risk becoming susceptible to various influences and pressures. In a world full of conflicting ideologies and temptations, individuals who lack conviction often find themselves adrift, easily swayed by external factors rather than staying true to their beliefs.

To me, the most essential of all these attributes is morals. Morals serve as the bedrock of your character and identity. They determine how you navigate life’s challenges and make decisions under pressure. When you possess a well-defined sense of right and wrong, you can approach situations with clarity and confidence. It raises a critical question: Without a solid moral foundation, can you really say you know yourself? Your morals not only impact your personal integrity but also influence how you interact with others. They shape your relationships, your leadership style, and ultimately, your legacy. In essence, cultivating a strong moral framework is not just about making ethical choices; it’s about fostering a deep and abiding understanding of who you are at your core.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello, my name is Martell Washington, and I proudly serve as a full-time law enforcement official. In addition to my commitment to keeping our community safe, I am also the founder of a venture called DadFashion. The inception of DadFashion was initially a spontaneous and enjoyable endeavor — something that started as a light-hearted project sparked by my passion for fashion and styling.

As someone who has embraced the dual roles of being a husband and a father, I’ve come to realize that many dads, including myself, often overlook the importance of personal appearance. In the whirlwind of daily responsibilities, whether it’s balancing work obligations or managing family duties, we can easily find ourselves lost in the hustle and bustle of life, neglecting an essential aspect of self-presentation and confidence.

As I delved deeper into my love for fashion, I recognized an opportunity: not only could I share my own styling tips and insights, but I could also provide support and guidance to other fathers who, like me, might be struggling to maintain a sense of personal style amidst the chaos of busy family life. This realization was the driving force behind the creation of DadFashion, where I could merge my interests and help fellow dads enhance their wardrobes.

To bring this vision to life, I began to create and share videos showcasing where I source my clothing — highlighting various brands that I wear and love. These videos serve not only to inspire but also to offer practical advice and recommendations on how to put together stylish outfits without sacrificing comfort and practicality. Through DadFashion, my goal is to empower fathers to take pride in their appearance, encouraging them to express their individuality while juggling their many responsibilities.

In this way, DadFashion has transformed from a casual hobby into a meaningful platform, fostering a community where dads can connect, share their style journeys, and ultimately feel more confident in their personal presentation.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My Wife saw me long before I was fully aware of who I really was, before I had uncovered the layers of my true self. She recognized potential in me that I hadn’t yet grasped, and her unwavering support became a catalyst for my personal growth. I vividly recall a moment from years ago when she casually turned to me and asked, “Are you going to model for me?” That simple question, posed with a gentle smile, ignited a spark in me—a realization of how powerful it could be to embrace my identity and express it in new and creative ways. From that point onward, my journey of self-discovery and transformation truly began.

Her encouragement was not just a one-time occurrence; it became a constant presence in my life. She believed in me even when I struggled to believe in myself, always reminding me of the strength and uniqueness that lay within. Because of her, I’ve learned to embrace the person I have evolved into—the confident individual I am today.

Every opportunity I get to express my gratitude to her feels like a small, but significant opportunity to acknowledge her vital role in my life. Whether it’s through thoughtful gestures, heartfelt words, or simply spending quality time together, I make it a point to show her just how much her support means to me. She has been my rock, my confidant, and my greatest champion, and I am forever thankful for the gift of her presence and the love she so freely gives.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Not long ago, I nearly decided to abandon my pursuit of DadFashion due to the exhaustion I felt from balancing family and work. Creating content became overwhelming and deeply affected me. I needed to realize the significance of following my own desires rather than those of others. I decided to step back from work and redirect my focus to DadFashion, which turned out to be the best decision I could have made for myself.

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My closest friend would describe my family as the most important part of my life. Anyone who knows me understands that my family means everything to me. Without them, I would feel adrift, like a lost soul wandering the planet.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
When making content, standing in front of the camera and being me. I’m at peace and happy.
