We’re looking forward to introducing you to Akeara W. Check out our conversation below.
Good morning Akeara, we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I feel like my true calling is owning my own studio and bringing a luxury experience to ALL women who have struggled with feeling beautiful or seen.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Akeara. I like to go by AK. I am a self-taught graphic designer, retoucher and photographer based in Memphis Tennessee. My work is a mix of portraiture and fantasy with a whole lot of color.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
Being a black woman with darker skin has come with its fair share of lessons. You learn to love the parts of you that the world doesn’t necessarily see as beautiful. From the features on my face to the culture that I hold so dearly, I have learned to embrace every aspect of who I am…even the mistakes I am currently learning from.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I often disappear from photography and designing because of anxiety. It cripples me into thinking that my work is too flawed to be seen. I sometimes pass up on opportunities because I am afraid that I don’t possess enough skillset to get the job done.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That beauty is monolithic. Often times, I wish my culture would adopt a different set of beauty standards than what is portrayed popularly. It is the sole reason why I became a photographer, to offer a different view.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
My attention to their idea. Whenever I am working with someone, I try to make their goals my most paramount task.
