Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Newson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born in Memphis and raised in Coldwater, MS, in a family where music was a way of life. At just seven years old, I discovered my gift for song, performing alongside my siblings as part of The Newson Singers. My style was shaped by legendary voices such as Willie Neal Johnson & The Keynotes, The Mighty Clouds of Joy, Johnny Taylor, and B.B. King — but my greatest influence was my grandfather, the late Pastor Julius “Bump” Smith, founder of The Spiritual Harmonizers.
At 18, I answered the call to ministry, traveling widely to learn, grow, and share inspiration through music. By 24, I was pastoring in Batesville, MS, and soon after, I established my own ministry in Senatobia. Today, I have come full circle, serving as senior pastor at GOD Ministries Christian Church in South Memphis.
My music journey began independently with the release of my first live CD/DVD project, I Will Please God. Partnering later with Central Gardens Music Group, LLC under Apostle Bill Adkins, I released the single He Is For Us, which brought national recognition. Most recently, my single Count Your Blessings has climbed the Mediabase Gospel charts, reaching the #1 spot in internet streams and remaining a powerful anthem of gratitude throughout 2025.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. Like many artists, I’ve faced seasons of doubt, financial obstacles, and moments where opportunities felt out of reach. Balancing ministry, family, and music hasn’t always been easy, but those challenges have shaped me. They pushed me to lean more on God’s direction instead of my own and reminded me that every trial has a testimony attached to it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work is rooted in gospel music, but it’s more than just singing- it’s ministry. When I write or choose songs, I pray first and let the Spirit guide the message. Sometimes lyrics come in quiet moments of devotion; other times they rise out of personal trials or testimonies. What I’m most proud of is staying true to the calling. Every time someone tells me my music gave them hope or helped them through a hard season, I know I’m walking in purpose.
What’s next?
My plan is to keep growing as an artist and minister. I will be releasing more original music and I hope to collaborate with other voices, both gospel and secular, and reach people beyond Memphis. Long term, I ‘d love to mentor younger artists, helping them find their voice in music while staying grounded in faith.
