We recently had the chance to connect with Dee Harris and have shared our conversation below.
Dee, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
A recent moment that made me laugh and feel proud was during a design install. My client walked in, looked around, and said, “This looks like a room from a magazine —I live here?” We both laughed, but I felt so proud in that moment. Seeing someone light up because of the space I created reminds me why I love what I do. It’s more than design—it’s about crafting environments that inspire joy, comfort, and confidence in the people who live there.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Dee Harris, the founder and principal designer of Dee Harris Interiors, a Memphis-based design firm where we transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary experiences. My philosophy is simple—your space should be a reflection of who you are and how you want to feel every day.
Through thoughtful design, curated details, and a touch of modern sophistication, I help clients bring their dream rooms to life. From residential transformations to commercial projects, my goal is always to create spaces that feel elevated, functional, and deeply personal.
Right now, I’m continuing to expand my brand’s reach with new design opportunities that allow me to share my story and inspire others to create beauty with intention.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was a curious, creative little girl who saw beauty in everything. I would rearrange furniture, mix patterns, and imagine entire stories behind every space I touched. I didn’t know it was called “design”—I just knew it made me feel alive.
Over the years, life shaped me through its lessons in resilience, strength, and self-discovery. But at my core, I’m still that girl who believes that spaces—and people—can be transformed with intention, care, and creativity. That part of me has never changed; it’s simply evolved into the woman and designer I am today.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear that held me back the most was the fear of not being enough—of failing or being misunderstood. For a long time, I tried to meet everyone’s expectations instead of trusting my own voice.
But over time, I realized that my power isn’t in being perfect—it’s in being real. Once I stopped chasing validation and started creating from a place of confidence and purpose, everything changed. Now, I see fear as something to move through, not something that defines me.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What do you believe is true but cannot prove?
I believe that energy leaves an imprint—that the intention you bring into a space becomes part of it. You can’t measure it or prove it, but you can feel it. When love, peace, and purpose are poured into a room, people sense it the moment they walk in.
That belief guides everything I do as a designer and as a woman. I think the energy we carry—our mindset, our faith, our gratitude—has the power to shift atmospheres and shape experiences long before a single piece of furniture is placed. It’s something I can’t prove, but I see its evidence in the way people feel when they step into a space designed with heart.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had 10 years left, I would stop overthinking and second-guessing myself. I’d stop trying to make everything perfect before allowing myself to fully live and enjoy the moment.
I’ve learned that peace, joy, and love don’t need to wait until everything looks “just right.” I would spend more time being present—with my family, my faith, my creativity—and less time trying to control outcomes. I’d pour even more energy into purpose, impact, and connection, because that’s what truly lasts.
Legacy, to me, isn’t about how much you do—it’s about how deeply you touch the people around you while you’re here.
