Hi Cherry, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Cherry Nguyen Luong, I am a 30-year-old native of Memphis, born and raised. I am happily married to an incredible man and mother to two beautiful, enthusiastic girls who keep life wonderfully vibrant.. My life with nails began at the early age of eight, when my mother purchased her salon, Karina’s Nails, in 2003.
The foundation of our business was built on the sacrifices of my Vietnamese immigrant parents. They arrived in Memphis in 1990 with no family and little support, striving tirelessly for the American Dream. Both began as factory workers until a friend suggested the opportunity in nail artistry to my mother. She enrolled in school, navigating the immense challenges of a language barrier, cultural differences, and fear. Through sheer resilience and unwavering determination, she overcame those obstacles, allowing her to eventually afford a salon.
For as long as I can remember, Karina’s Nails has been central to my life. What started as a family enterprise has blossomed into more than just a passion; it has become an integral part of my identity. I began practicing nails at age 13 and obtained my professional license immediately after high school. In 2025, I will celebrate my 12th official year in business, backed by over 17 years of experience.
I share my story because many people don’t realize that success and hard work don’t happen overnight. True success is not a destination but an ongoing journey—a constant cycle of learning and improvement, where knowing better empowers you to do better. I am incredibly proud that Karina’s Nails has been serving the Memphis and surrounding areas for over two decades. My professional journey has culminated in a calling: providing intimate, one-on-one nail care. I designed my service model to ensure every client who sits in my chair receives my full, devoted attention—guaranteeing a personalized experience they truly deserve.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Running a family business means navigating constant internal challenges, and for us, the lack of consistency was the toughest hurdle. Every major decision requires intricate planning, and the collision of different visions and opinions among family members has been the source of our deepest struggles. But together, we are a unit and I love how we always end up finding a way as long as we remember that we are stronger together than we are apart.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have strategically transitioned my focus from acrylics to natural nails. My current expertise centers on three advanced techniques: Rubber Base, Builder Gel, and the Russian Manicure.
Rubber Base is my go-to for reinforcing the natural nail. It features a thicker, highly flexible, and self-leveling consistency that outperforms standard gel bases. Its elastic nature allows it to bend with the nail plate, making it highly effective at strengthening and protecting weak, thin, or brittle nails and ensuring superior, long-lasting adhesion.
For clients seeking greater strength or length, I use Builder Gel. This product has a much denser consistency than rubber base and is engineered to add significant structure and durability. I use an advanced technique to create a “tip-less” extension that seamlessly builds length directly onto the natural nail.
Finally, I specialize in the Russian Manicure, also known as the Dry or E-file Manicure. This is a meticulous process that focuses intensely on the cuticle area for an exceptionally clean and detailed finish. We do not soak the nails because the dry technique prevents the nail plate from swelling and contracting. This is the main factor that ensures the gel adheres perfectly and lasts better and longer.
What truly sets me apart is my commitment to integrity and a client-first philosophy. For me, this business isn’t solely about the transaction; it’s about the relationship. My approach is rooted in authentic care and dedication. I believe in operating with complete honesty, prioritizing my clients’ nail health and satisfaction over revenue. I operate with genuine honesty and treat every client exactly how I would want to be treated. Over the years, these professional relationships have deepened, transforming my clients into an extension of my close friends and family.
How do you define success?
I don’t measure success by revenue; I measure it by the number of hearts I’ve touched and the impact I’ve made in people’s lives. My artistry allows me to be present for every major milestone—from graduations and engagements to weddings, pregnancies, and celebrating victories like beating cancer or the quiet triumph of making it through life in general. It’s been an absolute privilege and honor to be able to prep for these important life events and achievements. The true purpose of my work is defined by the joy I create and the privilege of sharing it in my clients’ life journeys.
